A 4-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari is a private road trip from Arusha: three nights, one full day and two part-days of game drives in the Serengeti, and about half a day on the floor of Ngorongoro Crater. It gives you a real first look at northern Tanzania if you only have a few days, as long as you accept that the drives in and out take up much of two of them. We quote it to order rather than publishing one price, because the cost depends mostly on where you sleep, how many people share the vehicle and when you travel.
This guide covers how the four days run, the official park fees behind any quote, what moves the price, when to go and when to add days. Fee figures come from Tanzania’s park authorities and are linked where they appear.

4-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari at a glance
| Detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Best for | Travelers short on time who want the Serengeti plains and the crater floor in one trip |
| How many days | 4 days and 3 nights, starting and ending in Arusha |
| Best months | Tanzania’s national parks authority, TANAPA, gives June to October for the migration and January to February for calving. The crater is worth visiting in any month. |
| From price | No fixed price. The 4 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari is tailor-made and quoted to order. Prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice. |
| Getting there | Fly into Kilimanjaro International (JRO) or Arusha (ARK), the nearest airports TANAPA lists. Its visitor guide names Arusha as the most common entry point and says road safaris may take 7 to 8 hours. |
| Vehicle, guide and meals | A private vehicle with a pop-up roof and a professional guide, with three meals a day and bottled water |
How the four days run
This is the route on our trip page. Your quote names the lodge or tented camp for each night, which is where the budget level you choose shows up.
| Day | Route | What fills the day | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arusha to the Serengeti | Pick-up from your Arusha hotel, a picnic lunch on the road and game drives as you enter the park | TANAPA says road safaris may take 7 to 8 hours. Park gates close at 6 PM. |
| 2 | Full day in the Serengeti | Game drives that follow the herds, with the guide finding them. The park covers more than 15,000 square kilometers (about 5,800 square miles). | Early starts make the most of the day. |
| 3 | Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater rim | Breakfast, a morning game drive, the transfer to Ngorongoro, the descent to the crater floor and a picnic lunch at Ngoitoktok springs. Night on the crater rim. | The conservation area authority lists 16:00 as the closing time for crater descent gates, so confirm timings with your planner. Olduvai Gorge is optional, with an extra fee. |
| 4 | Ngorongoro to Arusha | Breakfast, then the drive back, arriving in the afternoon, with a drop at your hotel or the airport | Leave slack in your onward flight in case the road is slow. |
The crater is about 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and covers about 260 square kilometers (100 square miles), according to the conservation area authority. A day-3 descent after a long transfer can feel short once you allow for the 16:00 gate time. If you would rather give the crater more room, ask your planner whether the descent can move to first thing on day 4. That means a later arrival back in Arusha.
Count game-drive hours, not days. On a road itinerary, days 1, 3 and 4 involve long drives, so you get one full day, two part-days and roughly half a day in the crater. That is enough to find lions, elephants, buffalo and zebra and, with luck, a leopard or cheetah. It is not enough for the northern river crossings, which sit a long way beyond the central plains.
What a 4-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari costs
We do not publish one price for this trip. Headline prices vary widely across operators, because a camping departure and a private lodge trip are very different safaris.
What the trip page lists
- Included: transfers, a vehicle with a pop-up roof, park entrance fees, a professional guide, camping or lodging fees, three meals a day, bottled drinking water and unlimited game drives.
- Not included: international flights, your visa, travel insurance, tips for the guide, laundry, alcoholic drinks and optional activities such as the Olduvai Gorge museum.
The park fees behind every quote
Three fees are set by the parks and sit behind any Serengeti and Ngorongoro itinerary, whoever you book with. These are the published international rates.
| Fee | Set by | Published rate | How it is charged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serengeti National Park entry | TANAPA | USD 70 per adult and USD 20 per child aged 5 to 15. The 2023/24 tariff sheet lists USD 60 per adult in the low season, 15 March to 15 May. | Per person, per day |
| Ngorongoro Conservation Area entry | Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) | USD 70.80 per adult and USD 23.60 per child | Per person, one entry within 24 hours |
| Crater service fee | NCAA | USD 295 per vehicle | Per vehicle, per crater trip, shared by everyone in it |
Add up two Serengeti days, one conservation area day and your share of the crater fee, and these three fees come to roughly USD 285 per adult in a vehicle of four and USD 360 in a vehicle of two. Treat that as a floor, not a price. It leaves out beds, meals and the per-vehicle entry fees both authorities charge, and the 2023/24 TANAPA sheet states that its charges exclude 18% VAT. The TANAPA Serengeti page shows no effective date, its tariff page is headed with the 2023/24 financial year, and NCAA says tariffs can change without notice. Your itemized quote carries the rates in force on your dates.
What moves the price
| Driver | How it changes the price | What to tell us |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sleep | The biggest swing. Budget camping, midrange lodges and luxury tented camps sit in very different price bands. | Budget, midrange or luxury |
| Group size | The vehicle, the guide and the crater fee are shared. The crater fee alone is USD 295 for a solo traveler, USD 147.50 each for two and USD 73.75 each for four. Solo travelers may also pay extra for their own room. | Adults, children and their ages |
| Dates | Park fees and lodge rates both follow the season. TANAPA’s 2023/24 tariff sheet marked 15 March to 15 May as low season for the Serengeti. | Your month, and how flexible you are |
| Drive or fly | A flight into the Serengeti swaps hours on the road for a per-person fare, usually with a strict luggage limit. | Whether a 7 to 8 hour drive is a problem |
| Extras | Olduvai Gorge, a balloon flight, tips, drinks, visas and insurance are paid on top. | Anything you want priced in |
Two Tanzania trips to start from
- 4 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari: for travelers short on time who want the plains and the crater. Quoted to your dates.
- 10 Day Tanzania’s Calving Season Safari: for travelers who can give ten days to the January to March calving grounds, Tarangire and the crater. From USD 5,910 per person, two sharing. Prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice.
Best time for a Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari
The Serengeti has wildlife all year, so timing is mostly about what the herds are doing. TANAPA gives June to October for the migration and January to February for calving.
- January to March: the herds calve on the southern plains. If that is your reason for going, a longer trip gives you more time with them.
- April and May: the long rains typically bring muddy tracks and quieter lodges. The 2023/24 TANAPA sheet also charged less for the Serengeti from 15 March to 15 May.
- June to October: the dry season, with the herds moving north. Crossings of the Mara and Grumeti rivers begin in July, according to Wikipedia. Our Great Migration safari guide goes month by month.
- November and December: the short rains. The herds drift back toward the south ahead of calving.
The conservation area authority describes wildlife in the crater as present all year, so it works in any month. The floor sits about 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level, according to Wikipedia, so pack a warm layer for the mornings.
Is four days enough?
Four days is enough for a first look and not much more. Longer trips include the same two places.
| Option | Where you go | Pace | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 days, road | Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater | Quick. Travel on days 1, 3 and 4. | Quoted to order |
| 10 Day Tanzania’s Calving Season Safari | Tarangire, the Serengeti, Ndutu and the crater | Unhurried, with two or three nights in most areas | From USD 5,910 per person, two sharing. Depends on season and lodge choice. |
| 11 Days Kenya and Tanzania Safari with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro | Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, the Masai Mara, the Serengeti, the crater and Lake Manyara | Steady, across two countries | Tailor-made quote |
Ask for more days if you want the river crossings, calving season plus Tarangire, or a gentler pace. Ask whether a flight can be priced for one leg if the 7 to 8 hour drive worries you. If you are weighing the Serengeti against Kenya’s Mara, our Masai Mara and Serengeti safari guide covers the crossing, flights and cost.
Visas and health before you go
Travelers from the UK and Canada need a Tanzanian tourist visa, and other passports follow their own rules. The UK government’s entry requirements tell British citizens to apply for an e-visa before they travel, with a passport valid for at least six months and one blank page, and a yellow fever certificate if arriving from a risk country. Canada’s advice says a single-entry tourist visa can be obtained on arrival at main ports of entry. Check your own government’s advice and the Tanzanian immigration service before you book.
The UK health advice lists malaria among the risks, suggests asking about vaccines at least 8 weeks before you go, and notes that medical facilities are limited outside Dar es Salaam. Make sure your insurance covers medical evacuation.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a 4-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari cost?
There is no fixed price for our version, because it is quoted to order for your dates, group size and lodge level. At the published rates the three main park fees alone come to roughly USD 285 to 360 per adult, before vehicle fees, VAT, beds and meals, and the rest depends mostly on where you sleep. Send your dates and who is traveling, and a planner replies with an itemized price within 6 hours.
Is 4 days enough for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater?
It is enough for a first look: one full day and two part-days in the Serengeti, and roughly half a day in the crater. It is not enough for the northern river crossings, for calving season plus Tarangire, or for a relaxed pace. If the drive worries you, add a night or ask about flying one leg.
How long is the drive from Arusha to the Serengeti?
TANAPA’s visitor guide names Arusha as the most common entry point, says road safaris may take 7 to 8 hours and lists regular flights to the Seronera airstrip. Flying saves hours but adds a per-person fare and luggage limits, so it is worth pricing both.
What is the best month for this safari?
For the migration, TANAPA gives June to October, and for calving January to February. April and May bring the long rains, and the 2023/24 TANAPA sheet charged less for the Serengeti then. The crater works in any month, so the best month depends on what you most want to see.
Do I need a visa and vaccinations for Tanzania?
Travelers from the UK and Canada need a tourist visa, and UK advice tells British citizens to apply for an e-visa before they fly. Ask a travel health clinic about vaccines and malaria prevention at least 8 weeks before you go. Rules differ by passport, so your own government’s advice is the one to follow.
What is not included in the price?
The trip page lists international flights, your visa, insurance, tips, laundry, alcoholic drinks and optional activities as extra. For a balloon flight or an Olduvai Gorge visit, ask whether it can be priced into your quote.
