About This Lake Magadi Day Trip
This Lake Magadi day trip heads south of Nairobi into the hot, otherworldly floor of the Rift Valley, where a vast soda lake shimmers pink and white against bare hills. It’s a landscape photographer’s dream — flamingos on the brine, bubbling hot springs, and shimmering mirages — and a fascinating look at how soda ash is harvested from the lake.
Bring a hat and a camera for one of Kenya’s most surreal day excursions. As a specialist Kenya DMC, Entice Africa Safaris arranges the transfers and a guide — explore our custom Kenya safari tours or find more on visiting Kenya at Magical Kenya. Curious? contact our team.

Safari Overview
Depart from Nairobi in the morning, heading south towards the Ngong Hills. You approach the lake from the eastern side via the Magadi town and past the Magadi Soda factory. Enter the Lake Magadi reserve area and continue to the hot springs where you will stop for lunch and wadding in the springs. You may have an opportunity to meet the local Masai who use the lake daily for swimming.
Lake Magadi is an amazingly unique and serene destination for nature lovers, bird lovers, and adventure camping tourists. Lake Magadi is well known for its wading birds, including flamingos and Pelicans. Some wildlife is also found around the lake; this includes giraffes, antelopes, ostriches, zebras, wildebeests, hyenas, and a few lion families are only seen very early in the morning or at night when the temperatures are low. Elephants and buffalos can be seen at the conservancy to the south of the lake. During the dry season, the lake is mainly covered by soda (sodium carbonate).
A single species of fish, a cichlid Alcolapia grahami, inhabits the hot, highly alkaline waters of this lake basin and is commonly seen in some of the hot spring pools around the shoreline. Midafternoon, return to Nairobi.
