Kenya Fly-In Safari: How It Works and What It Costs

Giraffes in Amboseli National Park with Mount Kilimanjaro behind

A Kenya fly-in safari replaces the long road transfers between parks with short flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to an airstrip near your lodge. The Masai Mara is about an hour away by air, against roughly 4 to 7 hours by road, so more of each day goes to game drives.

Our 6-day Amboseli and Masai Mara fly-in starts from USD 4,043 per person, two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates, and this guide covers how the flights work, how flying compares with driving, and what moves the price.

How a Kenya fly-in safari works

Your international flight lands at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), but safari flights leave from Wilson Airport, a Kenya Airports Authority airfield in Nairobi’s Lang’ata area, about 18 km by road from JKIA. Scheduled carriers such as Safarilink and AirKenya fly these routes, and the scheduled flights are included in the price of our 6-day and 10-day packages.

  1. Rest in Nairobi. Spend the night before in the city. On Safarilink’s current timetable, the first Wilson departures to the Mara and Amboseli leave between 07:30 and 08:15, depending on the season.
  2. Check in at Wilson. Your bags are checked against the weight limit and need to be soft-sided (see the luggage section below).
  3. Fly. The aircraft are small and the flights are scheduled, so you share the plane with other passengers. A flight may call at other airstrips on the way, and the Amboseli timetable shows scheduled times from 40 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on the service.
  4. Land beside the park. A driver-guide or a lodge representative meets you at the airstrip.
  5. Start the game drive. A morning flight usually means lunch at the lodge and an afternoon game drive the same day, as on day 1 of our 6-day trip.

Flying into the Masai Mara

Safarilink’s timetable shows four Wilson to Mara departures a day, at 07:30, 10:00, 14:15 and 16:00, each arriving an hour later, and says its Mara flights stop at any of the eight major airstrips passengers need. The airstrip matters, because the closer it is to your camp, the shorter the transfer. A late-afternoon arrival leaves little time for a first drive, and timetables change with the season, so we confirm flight times when we quote.

Fly-in safaris we run from Nairobi

6 days: Amboseli and the Masai Mara

This is a compact way to see two very different parks: Amboseli’s elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro behind them, then the open plains of the Mara. You travel with a private 4×4 with a pop-up roof and a driver-guide, and flying between the parks turns most of a road day into a short flight. Nobody can promise sightings, and Kilimanjaro depends on the cloud.

Day Where How you travel What happens
1 Nairobi to Amboseli Morning scheduled flight Lunch at the lodge, first game drive in the afternoon
2 Amboseli Private 4×4 Full day of game drives, with Kilimanjaro views when the cloud allows
3 Amboseli to the Mara Scheduled flight Lunch, then an afternoon game drive in the reserve
4 and 5 Masai Mara Private 4×4 Morning and afternoon game drives; optional sunrise hot-air balloon flight (USD 550 per person) or a Maasai village visit
6 Mara to Nairobi Scheduled flight Arrive at Wilson Airport; leave a generous gap before your international flight

The trip starts with a morning flight and the price covers five nights, so arrive in Nairobi the day before. Ask us to add a Nairobi night to the quote.

7 days: the Mara first, then Amboseli

If you would rather start in the reserve, the 7 Day 6 Nights Fly Package begins with a night in Nairobi, flies to the Mara for three nights, then to Amboseli for two, and returns to Nairobi on day 7. It starts from USD 5,605 per person, two sharing, on April to June rates. Your quote itemizes what the price covers.

10 days: Amboseli, Lumo Conservancy and Diani Beach

For bush and beach with no long road transfers, our 10 Days Best of Kenya Flying Package starts from USD 5,605 per person, two sharing, on April to June rates. You spend a first night in Nairobi, fly to Amboseli for two nights, fly on to Lumo Conservancy for three, then fly to Diani Beach for three more and return to Nairobi on day 10. It does not include the Mara.

Only want the Mara?

None of these trips is Mara-only. If the reserve is the whole point, ask for a tailor-made fly-in quote. Send your dates, group size and number of nights, and we price the flights, camp and optional balloon flight together.

Fly-in or drive: how they compare

Flying saves the most when the road leg is long and the stay is short. Here is how the two compare on the parks our fly-in trips use.

Fly-in Road safari
Nairobi to the Masai Mara About 1 hour scheduled (Safarilink) Published estimates run from about 4 to 7 hours, depending on traffic and how far into the reserve your camp is; about 224 km (139 miles) to the reserve’s eastern boundary
Nairobi to Amboseli 40 minutes to 1.5 hours scheduled (Safarilink) About 220 km (137 miles) to Meshanani Gate via Namanga, according to Kenya Wildlife Service: tarmac to Namanga, then murram (gravel) to the gate
Door to door Add the transfer to Wilson, check-in and the ride from the airstrip to camp No airport time, but a long first or last day
Luggage 15 kg per person, soft bags Far fewer limits
Cost logic A flight seat for every traveler Vehicle and guide shared across the group
Best for Short trips, two or more parks, travelers who tire on long drives Longer stays in one park, larger groups, tighter budgets

When driving is the better choice

Drive if you plan several nights in one park, travel as a larger group, or want to see the countryside between Nairobi and the Mara. Driving also suits travelers who dislike small aircraft or carry heavy camera gear. Some drive one way and fly the other, which keeps some scenery and saves several hours.

What a Kenya fly-in safari costs

On the 6-day trip, the price from USD 4,043 per person covers five nights, meals as per the itinerary, the scheduled flights between Nairobi, Amboseli and the Mara, a private 4×4 with a pop-up roof and a driver-guide, airport and airstrip transfers, park and conservancy fees, soft drinks and bottled water, and AMREF Flying Doctors emergency cover. It excludes international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips, alcohol and optional activities such as the balloon flight. The 10-day package includes nine nights, the flights, game drives, a driver-guide and transfers, with international flights, visa fees, tips and optional extras on top. Four things move the price:

  • Season. The 6-day trip is cheapest from January to March and costs more from July to October. The 10-day package is cheapest from April to June and costs most from July to October.
  • Group size. A solo traveler pays a single-room rate, and the per-person price eases as more people share rooms and the vehicle.
  • Lodge choice. Each park has several lodges and camps at different rates.
  • Number of flights. Every flight between camps adds a seat charge, so a long fly-in circuit costs more than a short one.

Flights are charged per seat, while a road safari is priced largely per vehicle, so flying tends to cost relatively more as the group grows. We can price both for the same dates.

Luggage on a fly-in safari: the 15 kg soft-bag rule

The small aircraft have limited hold space, so both Safarilink and AirKenya set the safari allowance at 15 kg (33 lb) per person, hand luggage included, in soft bags. AirKenya also counts handbags and small backpacks toward the 15 kg, so your camera bag counts. Safarilink lists a higher 20 kg limit for flights to destinations such as Diani, but pack to 15 kg for the whole trip.

  • Use a soft duffel and weigh it at home. Safarilink says it is harder to stow large rigid suitcases, and they might have to travel on the next available flight.
  • Ask your Nairobi hotel whether it will hold a larger suitcase until you return.
  • Extra weight is possible but not certain. Safarilink check-in staff may allow up to 2 kg of leeway, and beyond that excess travels only if space permits. Both airlines sell a freight seat for up to 75 kg of extra baggage, and AirKenya lists excess at USD 5 per kg where available.

Our Kenya safari packing list shows what to bring and what to leave at home.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fly-in safari worth the extra cost?

It is when time is short, when you want two or more parks, or when a road day to the Mara would take a big share of a trip of a week or less. It is less compelling for several nights in one park or for larger groups, where driving usually costs less per person. We can price both versions of your route.

Which airport do safari flights leave from?

Wilson Airport, not JKIA. It is a separate Kenya Airports Authority airfield in Nairobi’s Lang’ata area, about 18 km by road from JKIA, so plan a night in Nairobi before the first flight.

How much luggage can I take on a safari flight?

Safarilink and AirKenya both set 15 kg (33 lb) per person, hand luggage included, in soft bags. Extra allowance can be bought in advance, subject to space, and your planner confirms the allowance for every flight on your itinerary.

When is the best time for a Masai Mara fly-in safari?

The Mara has wildlife year-round, and the wildebeest herds typically reach it between July and October, though timing varies with the rains. On our 6-day trip, rates are lowest from January to March and higher from July to October, so you trade value against the migration. Our guide to the best time to visit Kenya for a safari covers the months in detail.

Can I fly to the Mara only, or add a beach stay?

Both are possible. None of the trips above is Mara-only, so we price a tailor-made fly-in from your dates and group size, and a Mara trip can finish with a coast stay. Tell us how much road time you will accept and we price the options side by side.

What do I need to enter Kenya?

UK and Canadian government advice both say travelers must apply online for a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization before they travel, through the official portal at etakenya.go.ke. UK advice adds that Kenyan authorities recommend applying at least 2 weeks before departure, and that a British passport must expire at least 6 months after arrival and have 2 blank pages. Canada’s advice also asks for a passport valid for 6 months from entry. Rules differ by nationality, so check your own government’s advice before you book.
