Yes, a Masai Mara and Serengeti safari works as one private trip, and it makes sense: the two are halves of a single ecosystem that the wildebeest herds circle every year, with a border running between them. The border is the part to plan, because you either cross by road at Isebania-Sirari on a long day or fly across. Our shortest published route takes 11 days.
Below you will find the crossing options side by side, when the herds are where, two sample routes, what drives the cost and which entry papers two countries need. Masai Mara is also spelled Maasai Mara; it is the same reserve.

One ecosystem, two countries
The Masai Mara reserve in Kenya is contiguous with Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, and the animals do not stop at the border. The Serengeti is about ten times larger, roughly 15,000 square kilometers against the Mara’s 1,510, so the two feel different on the ground. The Mara is compact, hillier and known for its big lion prides. The Serengeti is open and vast, so animals are more spread out and a good guide counts for more. Around Seronera in the central Serengeti, where our 21-day route spends its Serengeti nights, lions, leopards and cheetahs live all year.
Rhino are the exception, and sightings are uncommon in both reserves. Both routes below also include Lake Nakuru, a fenced rhino sanctuary, and Ngorongoro Crater, which holds a small population of black rhino, so you have better odds there.
Two sample routes for a Masai Mara and Serengeti safari
Both routes are private, with your own 4×4 and guide in each country, and both are starting points that we reshape to your dates. Our 11-day Kenya and Tanzania safari is the compact version.
| 11-day route | 21-day route | |
|---|---|---|
| Kenya | Amboseli 2 nights, Lake Nakuru 1, Masai Mara 3 | Masai Mara 3 nights, Lake Nakuru 1, Lake Naivasha 1, Amboseli 2 |
| Crossing | Isebania-Sirari, then Ikoma gate | Namanga, then Tarangire |
| Tanzania | Serengeti 2 nights, Ngorongoro 1, Lake Manyara 1 | Tarangire 2, Karatu for Ngorongoro 2, Serengeti 4 |
| Ends | Arusha, for flights from Kilimanjaro | Flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, then 4 beach nights |
| Trade-off | Two countries in 11 days, so the Serengeti gets two nights | More time everywhere, with five long drive days |
| Price | Tailor-made, quoted to your dates | From USD 9,050 per person, two sharing, on April to June rates |
If the Serengeti is your main reason for going, ask for more nights there. We can also place them in the south for calving or the north for crossings.
Crossing the border: road, air or both
You do not drive across the parks themselves. The road crossing runs outside them at Isebania-Sirari, and because Tanzania licenses vehicles and guides by country, you change both at the border. The east side has a second road crossing at Namanga.
| Option | How it works | Time | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road at Isebania-Sirari | Kenyan vehicle and guide to the border, then a Tanzanian vehicle and licensed guide. On our 11-day route you enter the Serengeti by Ikoma gate | About 350 km and 8 hours on our 11-day route. Other operators quote 8 to 10 hours or more | The longest day on our 11-day route. One travel site calls the road very bumpy, and border waits vary |
| Road at Namanga | A one-stop border post east of the parks. On our 21-day route it comes between Amboseli and Tarangire | 330 km and 8 to 9 hours, with the border and lunch | The Serengeti comes last, after Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongoro |
| Fly through Nairobi | Mara to Nairobi, on to Kilimanjaro, then a light aircraft into the Serengeti | Roughly one to two hours per flight. One operator estimates 4 to 6 hours door to door | Fewest hours on the road. Needs a connection in Nairobi, and light aircraft take soft bags with a weight limit |
| Fly with border clearance at a small airport | A FlyALS and Auric Air link between the Mara and the Serengeti clears immigration at Kisumu and Musoma. Another option flies Mara to Migori, crosses the border by road, then flies from Tarime | Announced for a 1 June 2026 start | Reported by ch-aviation and promoted by Auric Air. We have not confirmed that it is flying, so check the current schedule before you plan around it |
Flying buys back time, which matters most on short trips, and it adds cost and a baggage limit. The longer legs of our routes can be flown instead of driven. For a wider look at joining the two countries, read our Kenya and Tanzania safari guide.
Two routes to start from
- 21-Day Kenya and Tanzania Safari with Zanzibar: for travelers who want the full loop, from the Mara to a Zanzibar beach. From USD 9,050 per person.
- 11 Days, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara Safari: for travelers with under two weeks who still want both parks. Tailor-made, quoted to your dates.
When are the herds where?
Tanzania’s national parks authority gives June to October as the migration window in the Serengeti and January to February for calving. Where the herds are inside those windows depends on the rains, so treat the table as a pattern, not a timetable.
| Months | Where the herds usually are | What it means for a two-country trip |
|---|---|---|
| January to March | Southern Serengeti and the Ndutu plains. Calves are born from late January, peaking around February | Put your Serengeti nights in the south. The Mara still has resident big cats but few migratory herds |
| April to June | Moving north through the central and western Serengeti | Green, quiet and our low season. The long rains fall in April and May, some camps close and roads can be muddy |
| July to October | Northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara, with Mara River crossings | The headline season for both parks, and our peak price season |
| November to December | Heading back south on the short rains | Mid-season pricing from November. We can move Serengeti nights south from December |
Nobody can schedule a crossing. Herds gather at the river, sometimes for hours, and may turn back, so give yourself several days at the river rather than one. For the month-by-month detail, see our Great Migration safari guide.
One honest note on numbers: the usual figure is about 1.3 million wildebeest. A 2025 satellite study counted fewer than 600,000 across the northern Serengeti and the Mara in August 2022 and 2023, though its authors say differences in coverage may explain part of the gap. We would rather give you the months than a headcount.
Cost and paperwork
What drives the price
Our 21-day route starts from USD 9,050 per person. That is the lowest tier: April to June, two people sharing and Budget lodges. July to October costs more, and the final figure depends on season, group size and lodge choice. We quote the 11-day route to your dates. A two-country trip is built from different parts than a Kenya-only trip: park fees in two countries, a second vehicle and guide in Tanzania, any flights you add, and the papers below. Park and conservancy fees are included in our prices. International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips and drinks are not. A sunrise hot-air balloon over the Masai Mara is an optional extra at USD 550 per person.
Entry papers for two countries
- Kenya: most visitors need an eTA, applied for online. Normal processing starts at USD 30 and usually takes about three business days, and expedited processing costs an additional USD 100. UK government advice says local authorities recommend applying at least two weeks ahead.
- Tanzania visa: most visitors need a tourist visa, and UK government advice says to apply for an e-visa before you travel. Check the current fee on the official immigration site, because it is not in our price.
- Tanzania insurance: from 1 October 2026, most foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania must buy compulsory inbound travel insurance. The Tanzanian embassy notice gives the premium as USD 44 per visitor, valid for up to 92 days. Other travel insurance policies are not accepted in its place.
- Health: Tanzania asks for proof of yellow fever vaccination from travelers arriving from countries with transmission risk. Both routes enter Tanzania from Kenya, so plan to carry your certificate and ask a travel clinic how the rule applies to you. We ask for a copy of your certificate when you book. The CDC also recommends prescription malaria medicine for parts of Tanzania. See a clinic six to eight weeks ahead.
- Passport: UK government advice asks for at least six months of validity after you arrive in each country, and at least two blank pages for Kenya. Check your own government’s travel advice before you book.

Frequently asked questions
Can you drive from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti?
Yes, by road through Isebania-Sirari, not through the parks. Expect a full day: our 11-day route lists about 350 km and 8 hours from the Mara to the Serengeti, with lunch at the border, and other operators quote 8 to 10 hours or more. You change to a Tanzanian vehicle and a licensed Tanzanian guide at the border.
How many days do you need for both parks?
Our shortest published route is 11 days, with three nights in the Mara and two in the Serengeti, plus Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and Ngorongoro. If you have only a week, a Kenya-only trip such as our 7 Days Maasai Mara Migration Safari, from USD 4,500 per person depending on season, group size and lodge choice, is more relaxed than squeezing in two countries.
Which is better, the Masai Mara or the Serengeti?
Neither wins every month. The Mara is compact and strong for big cats and, from July to October, river crossings. The Serengeti offers space, calving in the south from January to March, and Ngorongoro Crater on the way. If you can, do both.
Can I add a beach to the end?
Yes. Our 21-day route flies from the Serengeti to Zanzibar and adds four nights on the coast. If you would rather go home sooner, you can skip the beach and fly out of Kilimanjaro after the Serengeti.
Is this route suitable for children or older relatives?
Often, with planning. Our 21-day route sets no minimum age, but five of its days are long drives, so for young children or anyone with limited mobility we suggest flying a leg or adding a night. Some camps and balloon operators set their own age limits, so tell us the ages when you ask for a quote.
