Where to Stay in Laikipia: Lodges and Camps by Conservancy

Laikipia has a stay for almost every kind of safari, and the choice is wider than most first-time visitors expect. Expert Africa’s directory lists 28 lodges, camps and houses there, from the three exclusive villas at Sanctuary at Ol Lentille to Sweetwaters Serena Camp, the largest camp in Laikipia. This guide groups them by conservancy and tier, so you can see what each area offers before you choose.

The tiers below repeat the wording of Expert Africa and of the conservancies themselves, because the directory publishes no price-from figure for any Laikipia property. Rates appear only where a source states them. If you are still choosing between areas, start with our complete guide to Laikipia’s conservancies.

Most travellers pair Laikipia with another park. Our 8-day Ol Pejeta, Masai Mara and Amboseli luxury safari is one example, and it starts from USD 10,270 per person. Prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice. For a wider view of upper-end stays across the country, see our guide to luxury safari lodges and camps in Kenya.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy: camps and cottages

Ol Pejeta has the longest list of any conservancy in this guide, and the widest spread of styles. That makes it a good place to compare options side by side.

Luxury and exclusive-use

  • Sanctuary Tambarare (Tambarare Camp): ten guest tents. Ol Pejeta describes it as a luxury tented camp with five-star service, and Expert Africa calls it a modern, hotel-style safari camp.
  • Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages: four private, fully staffed cottages, built in 2017, each with its own driver-guide and vehicle. Ol Pejeta calls them eco-friendly luxury. They suit a family or a small group that wants the place to itself.

Stylish and large tented camps

  • Kicheche Laikipia Camp: six tents, including a custom-designed family suite. Expert Africa calls it a stylish, very well-run tented camp.
  • Sweetwaters Serena Camp: tented accommodation with ensuite bathrooms. The directory describes it as a large, older camp, and it is the largest in Laikipia.

Simple tented camps

  • Porini Rhino Camp: eight guest tents and a wildlife viewing hide. The directory calls it small, simple and well established.
  • Ol Pejeta Bush Camp: a simple camp with comfortable tents.

Mutara Camp, River Camp and camping

Mutara Camp is a cliff-top camp and the only accommodation in the 20,000-acre Mutara Conservancy next to Ol Pejeta. Ol Pejeta lists River Camp without a description, and its menu also shows Pelican House, Stables and Camping Sites with no details on the page we saw. If a public campsite matters to you, ask us to confirm it before you plan around it.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy: comfortable lodges to luxury

Lewa’s own list has six entries. Five are covered here, ranging from a comfortable tented lodge to a small luxury camp.

  • Lewa Safari Camp (Elewana): a comfortable, homely tented lodge.
  • Kifaru House (Elewana): five thatched cottages in a small, stylish lodge.
  • Lewa Wilderness: nine cottages. The directory calls it a comfortable, fenced safari lodge, so check the setting suits you.
  • Lewa House: a very comfortable lodge in the style of a farmstead.
  • Sirikoi: family-owned, with four luxury tents, Sirikoi Cottage and the private Sirikoi House. The directory calls it a small camp of very high quality.

Borana Conservancy: lodge and private houses

Borana Lodge is described as a comfortable and striking lodge, and it sits at the upper end. Borana also has exclusive-use houses: a travel-agent summary names Laragai, Sirai and Arijiju, while Lewa’s list says Borana has five properties. The list may be longer than three, so we confirm the current houses when we quote.

What Laikipia stays cost

Expert Africa does not use the word budget for any Laikipia property, and it publishes no rates, so we cannot honestly rank properties by price. Two published sources do give figures:

  • Borana Lodge: its own 2026 rates are USD 1,025 per adult per night in the standard season and USD 1,320 at peak, inclusive (Borana rates).
  • Ol Jogi House: a go2africa guide shows USD 4,128 to 5,525 per person sharing. Check what the guide’s figure covers before comparing it with other lodges.

We have no rates for the other properties and will not guess them. Our own trips use a from-price per person for midrange travel in low season with two sharing, so a trip price and a lodge rate are not the same measure. For conservancy fees, flights and what a full week costs, read our Laikipia safari cost guide. Fees last verified: October 2026.

Loisaba Conservancy: four ways to stay

  • Loisaba Tented Camp: a luxury base of tented rooms, rebuilt in 2016.
  • Loisaba Lodo Springs: eight ultra-private rooms, opened in 2019.
  • Loisaba Star Beds: four rooms with open-air star beds. The directory calls it a simple camp, and the beds make it distinctive.
  • Galago Private Canvas: a fully private camp built for one group.

Other private conservancies and ranches

Several of Laikipia’s most exclusive stays are the only accommodation on their land. Our guide to Segera, Mugie, Sosian and Ol Jogi covers those quieter conservancies in more depth.

Luxury lodges

  • Segera Retreat: a luxurious, exclusive lodge in its own private conservancy in the Mount Kenya foothills.
  • Solio Lodge: an exclusive, luxurious bush lodge and the only accommodation inside Solio.
  • Governors’ Mugie House: a substantial luxury lodge, one of only two properties in Mugie.
  • Suyian Lodge (andBeyond): opened in July 2025 with 14 suites, and described as a conservation-focused lodge.
  • Ol Jogi House: 13 suites plus the Simba and Mgobo family cottages, with exclusive use of the lodge and conservancy possible.

Ranch houses, villas and family camps

  • Sosian Lodge: an estancia-style, restored colonial ranch house.
  • Ekorian’s Mugie Camp: a pleasant, family-friendly camp in remote north-west Laikipia.
  • Sanctuary at Ol Lentille: three exclusive villas in northern Laikipia.
  • Ol Malo: Samburu-led, on the northern edge of Laikipia, with a lodge of four boutique rooms, the Main House, Crocodile Cottage, Hippo Cottage, Leopard Hide, The Treehouse and the Ol Malo Nomad mobile camp.

Rustic and owner-run

  • El Karama Lodge: a comfortably rustic, very personal riverside eco-lodge.
  • Laikipia Wilderness Camp (Ol Doinyo Lemboro Ranch): a rustic bush camp run by its owner.
  • Moon’s Camp (Lolldaiga Hills): a small tented camp run by its owner.
  • Sandai: an owner-run homestay between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya.

If you want to explore on foot, Expert Africa also lists Karisia Walking Safaris, an operator offering camel-assisted walks from its Tumaren camp.

Community-owned lodges

  • Il Ngwesi Eco-Lodge: owned and run by the Il Ngwesi Maasai community and built in 1996. It has six open-fronted cottages, two with star beds.
  • Tassia Lodge (Lekurruki): a remote, cliff-side community eco-lodge.
  • Koija Starbeds: a community-owned treehouse camp on the Ewaso Nyiro, opened on 7 March 2002.

Exclusive-use houses and private camps

If you want a whole house or camp to your group, these are the options named above. Our guide to private bush villas in Kenya explains how exclusive-use stays work.

Property Where What is private
Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages Ol Pejeta Four cottages, each with its own driver-guide and vehicle
Sirikoi House Lewa’s list The private Sirikoi House, offered alongside the camp’s four luxury tents
Laragai, Sirai and Arijiju Borana Exclusive-use houses, per a travel-agent summary
Galago Private Canvas Loisaba A fully private camp built for one group
Ol Jogi House Ol Jogi Exclusive use of the lodge and conservancy is possible
Sanctuary at Ol Lentille Northern Laikipia Three exclusive villas

Choosing between them

  • First safari, mixed ages: Ol Pejeta has the most variety in one place, including family-suite and cottage options.
  • Privacy above all: choose an exclusive-use house or the only lodge on its land, such as Solio Lodge or Galago Private Canvas.
  • Simpler and quieter: the simple tented camps and rustic owner-run camps. We have no rates for them, so ask for a quote.
  • Community ownership: Il Ngwesi, Tassia or Koija Starbeds.
  • Laikipia plus the Mara: see our Masai Mara safari guide and ask us to link the two in one route.
