A luxury Masai Mara safari means a small camp or lodge, a private 4×4 with your own guide, and usually a short flight from Nairobi instead of a long day on the road. The choice that shapes the trip most is where you sleep: inside the national reserve, or in a private conservancy next to it. Our 6-day fly-in starts from USD 4,043 per person, two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates, and our 8-day three-area trip from USD 10,270 per person; prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice.
This guide is for travelers planning from abroad. It covers reserve versus conservancy stays, what two of our plans include, what moves the price, how flying in works and when to go.

Conservancy or national reserve: where to stay
The Masai Mara is two kinds of land with different rules. The national reserve is run by Narok County, except the Mara Triangle in the west, which the non-profit Mara Conservancy manages separately. Conservancies are private land leased from Maasai families along the reserve’s edge. This section draws on Africa Geographic’s reserve-or-conservancy guide and on the Mara Triangle’s own rules.
What the reserve offers
The reserve is generally the cheaper place to stay, and it holds the Mara River crossing points. The rules keep vehicles on marked tracks, however close the action, and end activity at sunset, so there are no night drives or guided walks. In peak weeks, vehicle numbers at a single crossing can run into double figures. The Mara Triangle sets its own park rules: when more than five vehicles are waiting at a sighting, viewing time is limited to 10 minutes.
What a private conservancy offers
Conservancy camps work under bed-density agreements with Maasai landowners, typically one tent for every 350 to 700 hectares (a hectare is about 2.5 acres). Guided walks and night drives are allowed, and vehicles may leave the track to approach a sighting. One operator guide puts the limit at around three or four vehicles at a sighting, and the number varies by conservancy. Nightly rates generally run higher than comparable reserve camps, and the land-lease fees go directly to the Maasai families who own the ground.
Many travelers do both
Because the crossing points sit inside the reserve, many guests spend a few nights in a conservancy and a few in the reserve. If you stay in a conservancy and want a crossing, ask how the camp handles the trip to the river and the reserve entry fee. For ideas on where to sleep, see our guide to the best luxury safari lodges and camps in Kenya.
| Question | National reserve | Private conservancy |
|---|---|---|
| Driving | Tracks only, even for close sightings | May leave the track to approach a sighting |
| Night drives | No. Activity ends at sunset | Allowed |
| Walking safaris | No | Guided walks allowed |
| Other vehicles | Double-figure crowds at crossings in peak weeks | Capped at sightings; one operator guide cites three or four |
| River crossings | The crossing points are inside the reserve | Ask the camp how it handles trips to the river |
| Nightly rates | Generally lower | Generally higher |
Two luxury Masai Mara plans, and what they include
Both plans are private, with your own 4×4 and guide, and both use flights to save road days. The 6-day page places the Mara stay inside the reserve. The 8-day page lists example camps “or similar”, so if you want a conservancy stay, say so in your quote request and we will price it tailor-made.
| Question | 6-Day Fly-In Big Five Safari | 8-Day Ol Pejeta, Masai Mara and Amboseli |

| Getting around | Scheduled flights Nairobi to Amboseli, Amboseli to the Mara, and the Mara to Nairobi | Drive to Ol Pejeta, flight from Nanyuki to the Mara, flight to Nairobi, then drives to Amboseli and back |
| Mara stay | Inside the reserve, per the trip page. Options listed include Mara Serena Safari Lodge and Elewana Sand River Camp | Example camps are listed “or similar”. Tell us if you prefer a conservancy |

The 6-day plan, day by day
| Day | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 | Morning flight from Nairobi to Amboseli, lunch at the lodge, first game drive |
| 2 | Full day of game drives in Amboseli with Kilimanjaro behind the elephants |
| 3 | Flight to the Mara, then an afternoon game drive |
| 4 to 5 | Two full Mara days. A sunrise balloon flight or a Maasai village visit can be added at extra cost |
| 6 | Flight back to Wilson Airport in Nairobi |
What the from-prices mean
The 6-day price is a two-sharing rate for January to March 2027, the cheapest dates on its page. The same trip costs more from July to October, and solo travelers pay more. The 8-day price is the lowest tier on its page, which assumes a group of four in low season, so couples and solo travelers pay more per person. Both trip pages list park fees, a private 4×4, a driver-guide and meals as included, and the 6-day page adds the flights and AMREF Flying Doctors emergency cover. The 8-day itinerary also uses flights, so check your itemized quote for exactly what is covered.
Two ways to see the Mara in comfort
- 6-Day Fly-In Big Five Safari: for couples and small groups who want Amboseli and the Mara in six days, with flights instead of road days. From USD 4,043 per person, two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates.
- 8-Day Ol Pejeta, Masai Mara and Amboseli luxury safari: for travelers who want rhinos, the Mara and Amboseli in one trip at a higher level of lodging. From USD 10,270 per person.
What else shapes the price of a luxury Mara safari
Reserve entry and conservancy fees
Narok County sets entry for the main reserve, and the Mara Triangle publishes its own tariff. Reserve lodges and operators currently publish USD 100 per non-resident adult per day from January to June and USD 200 per day from July to December. Children pay a reduced rate and the youngest enter free. A day ticket runs from 6 am to 6 pm. The county can change these figures, so your quote shows the rate in force on your dates. Park and conservancy fees often sit outside a camp’s nightly rate, so ask for them to be itemized.
What other operators publish
One operator’s 2026 guide puts superior luxury camps in the Mara at around USD 850 to 1,200 per person per night and ultra-luxury camps at USD 1,200 to 2,600 or more, with meals, drinks and daily game drives included but flights, park fees and balloon flights usually extra. Another operator’s guide puts luxury tented camps at USD 700 to 1,500 or more per person per day. Treat these as indicative. They are nightly camp rates, while our trip prices bundle lodging, park fees, a private vehicle and guide and, on the 6-day plan, the flights, so the numbers are not like for like. If you want a top-tier conservancy camp, tell us and we will price it.
Extras to plan for
Our optional Masai Mara hot-air balloon add-on is USD 450 per person. Both trip pages list international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips and alcoholic drinks as not included, and the Kenya eTA carries its own application fee.
Getting there: fly or drive
Most international travelers land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and transfer to Wilson Airport for the light-aircraft flight. The flight takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how many airstrips the plane stops at, against a drive of five to six hours. On a 6-day trip, driving in and out would use 10 to 12 hours on the road. Our guide to how a Kenya fly-in safari works and what it costs goes through the flights in more detail.
Light aircraft have tight baggage limits. Safarilink, a scheduled operator on this route, allows 15 kg (about 33 lb) per passenger to most destinations including hand luggage, in soft bags. Other carriers can differ, so check the limit before you pack. Driving suits travelers with more days or a smaller budget, and we can price a road-in version of a luxury stay.
When to go
Mara River crossings occur most reliably from around July to mid-October, with the peak typically in August and September. Those months also carry some of the highest camp rates, and the higher reserve entry fee applies from July. Outside crossing season the Mara still offers game viewing all year, usually at lower rates.
If the crossings are the priority and you would rather drive, our 7 Days Maasai Mara Migration Safari adds Lake Nakuru and Amboseli and starts from USD 4,500 per person, the lowest tier on its page (three sharing). It offers three lodge levels rather than a dedicated luxury plan, so tell us if you want the top one.

Frequently asked questions
How many nights should I spend in the Masai Mara?
Both of our plans use three nights, which gives two full days of game drives plus an arrival-afternoon drive. If you want to split the stay between the reserve and a conservancy, we would plan four or more nights so each stay gets two full days.
Is a conservancy better than the reserve?
Neither is better; they suit different priorities. A conservancy gives you night drives, guided walks and fewer vehicles at sightings, at generally higher nightly rates. The reserve gives you the river crossing points and generally lower rates, with more vehicles in peak weeks.
Can I do a luxury Masai Mara safari by road?
Yes. The drive from Nairobi takes five to six hours, against a flight of about 45 minutes to an hour. Flying saves road time but adds the cost of flights and a luggage limit. Tell us your days and budget and we will price both options.
What does a luxury Masai Mara safari not include?
On our trip pages, international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips and alcoholic drinks are extra, and the Kenya eTA is a separate fee. The optional hot-air balloon add-on is USD 450 per person. Your itemized quote lists what is and is not covered for your dates and camps.
Do I need a visa or an eTA for Kenya?
Most visitors from abroad need a Kenya electronic travel authorization (eTA), applied for online through the official portal at etakenya.go.ke. The portal lists fees starting at USD 30 for normal processing and recommends applying at least two weeks before travel. Passport rules depend on your nationality. The UK government’s entry requirements for Kenya, written for British passport holders, ask for a passport valid for six months after arrival with two blank pages and, from 5 October 2026, travel health insurance bought as part of the application. US travelers should check the State Department’s Kenya country page before booking.
