A Kenya safari from Canada means at least one connection (the quickest one-stop routes average about 19 hours from Toronto), an online Kenya eTA instead of a visa, and a safari price in US dollars. Our private 10-day safari starts from USD 3,850 per person, about CAD 5,480, land only, so your flights, the eTA and travel insurance come on top.
This guide covers what changes when you start in Canada: routes, entry rules, the Government of Canada’s advice and a budget in Canadian dollars. Rules, advisories and fares change often, so recheck each official page before you pay a deposit.

Flights from Canada to Kenya
Kayak’s route pages for Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver all say there are currently no direct flights to Nairobi. Its Toronto page lists one-stop itineraries through London, Istanbul, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Addis Ababa and New York. The quickest average one-stop trip is about 19 hours from Toronto and Montreal and about 22 hours from Vancouver.
Routes worth pricing
Air Canada’s Canada-to-Kenya page lists fares from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver (snapshot below). A New York connection is another route to price: Kenya Airways says it flies direct from New York to Nairobi, about 13 hours 45 minutes on average. Travelweek reports that WestJet and Kenya Airways signed an interline agreement in July 2025: one ticket to Nairobi through Paris, Amsterdam, London or New York JFK, with bags checked through. Ask WestJet whether your home airport is covered.
Time zones and your first day
Kenya has no daylight saving, so the gap with Toronto shifts by an hour when Canada changes its clocks. On day 1 of our 10-day itinerary, someone from our team meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and takes you to your Nairobi hotel.
Entry rules for Canadian passport holders: the Kenya eTA
Kenya’s electronic travel authorization (eTA) replaces the visa for most visitors. The official portal’s exempt list does not include Canada, and the Government of Canada’s advice agrees. Apply only at etakenya.go.ke or in the official “Kenya Travel Authorisation” app.
- Fee: the standard eTA starts at USD 30, about CAD 43. Expedited processing is an additional USD 100.
- Timing: processing usually takes about three business days, but leave margin: the portal advises applying two weeks or more before departure.
- Passport: valid for at least six months from your date of entry, with at least one blank page.
- You will need: a photo, contact details, arrival and departure details, an accommodation booking confirmation and a payment card. Every traveler needs their own eTA, and the form has an “Apply as a Group” option.
An eTA does not secure entry on its own: the portal says immigration officers decide at the border. Keep the approval where you can show it quickly, on your phone or printed. The form asks for an accommodation booking, so apply once your first night in Nairobi is booked.
What a Kenya safari costs from Canada, in Canadian dollars
Our prices are in US dollars. The “from” price on the 10-day safari is the low-season rate, April to June, at Budget lodge level with two people sharing. The route runs from Nairobi north to Samburu, then Ol Pejeta for rhinos, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and three nights in the Maasai Mara. July to October and higher lodge levels cost more. Our guide to what a Kenya safari really costs explains what moves the price.
| Cost line | In our safari price? | In Canadian dollars |
|---|---|---|
| Private 4×4, driver-guide, nine nights of lodging, safari meals, airport transfers, park and conservancy fees | Yes | From USD 3,850 per person, about CAD 5,480 |
| International flights from Canada | No | Price your dates; snapshot below |
| Kenya eTA | No | From USD 30, about CAD 43 |
| Travel and medical insurance | No, strongly recommended | Get quotes from your insurer |
| Hot-air balloon over the Maasai Mara | Optional | USD 450 per person, about CAD 640 |
Flight fares from Canadian cities: a snapshot
On October 9, 2026, Air Canada’s Canada-to-Kenya page listed these round-trip economy fares to Nairobi. It warns that fares may no longer be available at booking, so use them to size your budget, not to book.
| From | Travel dates | Round trip, economy |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto | Feb 1 to Mar 5, 2027 | CAD 1,890 |
| Toronto | Sep 13 to 27, 2027 | CAD 1,901 |
| Montreal | Dec 21, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027 | CAD 2,765 |
| Vancouver | Jan 10 to 25, 2027 | CAD 2,032 |
| Vancouver | Sep 2 to 26, 2027 | CAD 2,116 |
For a rough floor from Toronto, add the USD 3,850 land price (about CAD 5,480), the CAD 1,890 fare and the eTA (about CAD 43): roughly CAD 7,400 per person, before insurance, tips and drinks. It is a floor, not a quote. The low-season land rate covers April to June while that fare is for February and March, and land rates rise from July to October.
Paying in US dollars from Canada
The Bank of Canada’s daily rate was 1.4240 Canadian dollars per US dollar on October 8, 2026, and every conversion on this page uses it. The rate has ranged this year from 1.3515 on January 29 to 1.4257 on October 7, a difference of about CAD 286 on USD 3,850. Your card adds its own conversion charge; the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s guide uses 2.5% in its example, and your cardholder agreement shows the real figure. Deposit and cancellation terms come with your quote, and nothing is booked until you confirm.

What the Government of Canada says about Kenya
Risk level and regions
The Government of Canada’s Kenya travel advice, last updated on October 7, 2026, says to exercise a high degree of caution, with regional advisories, because of the threat of terrorism and a high crime rate. It advises against all travel to the counties bordering Somalia, to parts of Turkana and Marsabit near the South Sudan and Ethiopia borders, and to the coastal strips of Tana River and northern Kilifi counties. None of the overnight stops on our 10-day route are in those counties or coastal strips. The advisory also calls some areas of Isiolo County unsafe, and the road to Samburu runs past Isiolo town, so ask us about that stretch when you request your quote.
The advisory also says visitors traveling overland to certain game parks, including routes from Nairobi to the Amboseli, Masai Mara, Nakuru and Tsavo parks, have been attacked by armed criminals, and that tourists have been targeted for carjackings and robberies on trips to and from Nairobi’s airport. It says to use only reputable and professional guides or tour operators. Ask any operator, including us, who meets you at the airport and who drives. Ours is a private vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide throughout and a meet-and-greet at the airport.
The Ebola notice
When we checked on October 9, 2026, the advisory carried a health notice titled “Ebola disease in Kenya”. It says Kenya has reported a case in Nairobi linked to the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and that the risk to most travelers is low with appropriate precautions. It asks you to monitor your health in Kenya and for 21 days after you leave. This is changing quickly, so read the current notice before you pay a deposit.
Health, vaccines and insurance
The advisory says antimalarials may be recommended depending on your itinerary and the time of year, suggests seeing a health professional about six weeks before you travel, and recommends hepatitis B vaccination for all travelers. Medical care is good in Nairobi but can be very limited elsewhere. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you are coming from a country where yellow fever occurs, and officials spot-check, so carry your certificate and ask your clinic whether your connection counts.
The Government of Canada’s travel insurance page says your provincial or territorial plan may cover none, or only a small part, of your care abroad, and never pays up front. Buy a policy that covers medical evacuation to Canada or the nearest place with medical care, and get written confirmation that it covers any pre-existing condition. Trip cancellation cover applies only before departure, so check that trip interruption cover is included. Registration of Canadians Abroad is free.
When to go, and how many days
Kenya Wildlife Service names July to December and December to March as the best months to visit its parks, and April to June as the low season, when the long rains fall and most park roads may need four-wheel drive. In 2024 a KWS official told the Kenya News Agency that the herds move to the Kenyan side between July and October, which fits the Canadian summer break. January to March suits a winter escape. Our guide to the best time to visit Kenya for safari takes the year month by month.
With 19 hours or more of travel each way, we suggest at least six days on the ground.
| Option | Suits | From price |
|---|---|---|
| 6-day fly-in Big Five safari, Amboseli and the Mara | Limited vacation days; scheduled flights replace long drives. Spend a night in Nairobi first, since day 1 is a morning flight. | USD 4,043 per person, about CAD 5,760, two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates |
| 10-day safari, Samburu to the Maasai Mara | First-timers who want rhinos, big cats and the Mara | USD 3,850 per person, about CAD 5,480 |
| 14-day safari with Diani Beach | Two weeks, with three nights on the Indian Ocean to finish | USD 5,000 per person, about CAD 7,120 |

Frequently asked questions
Do Canadians need a visa for Kenya?
Canadians do not need a tourist visa, but Canada is not on Kenya’s eTA exempt list, so you must hold an approved eTA before you fly. Fees start at USD 30, and the portal advises applying two weeks or more before departure.
Are there direct flights from Canada to Kenya?
No. Kayak’s route pages for Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver list only itineraries with a connection. The quickest average one-stop trips run about 19 hours from Toronto and Montreal and 22 from Vancouver.
Is Kenya safe for Canadian travelers right now?
The Government of Canada says to exercise a high degree of caution, with regional advisories, and names areas to avoid, none of which hold our overnight stops. It also carried an Ebola notice on October 9, 2026, so read the current advice before you book.
Do I need malaria pills or a yellow fever certificate?
Antimalarials may be recommended depending on your itinerary, so the advisory suggests seeing a health professional about six weeks before you travel. A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country where yellow fever occurs, so ask your clinic about your connection.
