Kenya Safari from Australia: Getting There and What It Costs

A Kenya safari from Australia means about a day of travel each way, usually with one stop, and an online eTA instead of a visa. On the ground, our private 10-day safari starts from USD 3,850 per person, land only, which is about AUD 5,520 at the Reserve Bank of Australia’s 9 October 2026 exchange rate, before flights, the eTA and travel insurance.

We are a Nairobi-based operator and every trip we run is private, with your own 4×4 and guide. Below you will find flight times, how many days justify the long flight, what the eTA and Smartraveller say, and a budget in Australian dollars.

Getting from Australia to Nairobi

Our safaris start at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, and from Australia you connect on the way. Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad all sell Australia-to-Nairobi tickets. Emirates’ own schedule page lists only one-stop journeys from Sydney:

DirectionDepartsArrivesTotal time

Nairobi to Sydney22:4507:05, two days later24 hours 20 minutes

Times are local, for sample dates in mid-October 2026 (read on 9 October). Other airlines and cities will differ, so check your own dates.

What the airfare looks like

Etihad’s Australia-to-Nairobi page, read on 9 October 2026, listed return economy fares from AUD 1,960, including sample fares of AUD 1,962 from Sydney and AUD 2,338 from Melbourne for October and November 2026 dates. Etihad warns that fares may no longer be available, and fares for the migration months will differ.

Jet lag and your first night

Nairobi is on UTC+3 all year with no daylight saving (timeanddate.com). That makes it 8 hours behind Sydney while Sydney is on daylight saving, from early October to early April, and 7 hours behind the rest of the year (timeanddate.com).

Day 1 of our 10-day safari is simply arrival. Our team meets you in the arrivals hall and drives you to your hotel, and the drive north starts after an early breakfast on Day 2. On the last day, the drive back from the Maasai Mara reaches Nairobi in the early afternoon, traffic permitting. If your flight home leaves that afternoon or early evening, ask about the optional scheduled flight from the Mara to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (45 minutes to an hour, price on request). Counting the flights, you are away for roughly 11 to 13 calendar days, using the Emirates times above.

How Many Days Is a Kenya Safari from Australia Worth?

With about a day of flying each way, a very short trip spends more time in the air than in the bush. We suggest 10 days on the ground for most first-timers, and a fly-in if you can only spare about a week.

TripDaysRouteFrom priceBest for
6-Day Fly-In Big Five Safari: Amboseli & Masai Mara6Light-aircraft flights: Nairobi, Amboseli, Maasai Mara, backfrom USD 4,043 per person, two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates (about AUD 5,790)A week or less, with no long road days
10-Day Kenya Safari10By road: Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Maasai Marafrom USD 3,850 per person (about AUD 5,520)First-timers who want range and a strong chance at the Big Five
14-Day Kenya Safari & Diani Beach Holiday14Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, then 3 nights on Diani Beachfrom USD 5,000 per person (about AUD 7,160)Safari, then a beach to recover from the flight

Prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice, and each from-price is a starting figure, not a quote. The 10-day route suits most first-timers because it shows Kenya’s range: Samburu’s northern species such as reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra, rhinos at Ol Pejeta and Lake Nakuru, then three nights in the Mara. Leopard is the swing factor, and no guide can promise a sighting. It is a starting plan, so we can fly legs to save road time (light aircraft take 15 kg per person in soft bags), add Amboseli, or finish at the coast.

What a Kenya Safari from Australia Costs in Australian Dollars

We price in US dollars, so your cost in Australian dollars moves with the exchange rate. The table uses the Reserve Bank of Australia’s published rate for 9 October 2026, USD 0.6979 per Australian dollar (the RBA page updates daily). Convert again when you pay.

Add the 10-day from-price, the lowest sample Sydney fare and the eTA and you reach about AUD 7,500 per person, before insurance, tips and extras. Treat that as a floor, not a quote: our from-price is a low-season, budget-level rate, and the fare is for sample dates in October and November 2026. At USD 0.65 per Australian dollar the 10-day from-price would be about AUD 5,920. At USD 0.75, it would be about AUD 5,130.

What is in the price, and what is not

  • Included on the 10-day trip: a private 4×4 Land Cruiser and your own driver-guide, 9 nights’ accommodation, meals as listed, all game drives, all park and conservancy fees, airport transfers and government taxes.
  • Not included: international flights, the eTA, travel insurance, tips, drinks at lodges, flights within Kenya and optional extras such as the balloon flight.
  • Solo travelers pay more per person than two people sharing, so ask for a solo quote.

Smartraveller says your travel insurance must cover all medical costs overseas, including evacuation. For our other trips, see Kenya safari package prices.

Best Time for a Kenya Safari from Australia

Magical Kenya, the country’s tourism website, says the Great Migration is a year-round event, but the most dramatic part runs from July to October, when millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. No one can promise the day of a river crossing, so allow several days in the Mara.

The rest of the year has fewer vehicles. Smartraveller says Kenya normally has two rainy seasons, from March to June and from October to November, and that flash flooding can occur. In our seasons, July to October is peak, November to March is mid season, and April to June is low season, with lush scenery, afternoon showers, the best rates and a few camps closed for part of it. The Mara’s resident lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants stay put all year. Our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Kenya goes further.

July to October is the most expensive stretch, and the Christmas and New Year weeks book out early and can carry lodge supplements, so tell us early if school breaks fix your dates.

Entry Rules, Health and Safety for Australians

The Kenya eTA

  • Smartraveller says you must apply online and pay for an Electronic Travel Authorisation before you arrive. Australia is not on the exemption list on the official eTA site.
  • The fee starts at USD 30 per person and expedited processing adds USD 100 (official FAQs). Standard processing usually takes 3 business days, and the portal recommends applying at least 2 weeks before travel.
  • Each traveler needs their own application, made only on etakenya.go.ke or in the official Kenya Travel Authorisation app.
  • Your passport needs at least 6 months’ validity and one blank page. The form also asks for your itinerary and an accommodation booking confirmation.
  • An eTA is permission to travel. The official site says admissibility is decided at the point of entry.

Vaccinations, malaria and insurance

Smartraveller says yellow fever is widespread in Kenya and advises vaccination and carrying your certificate. Healthdirect recommends getting the vaccine at an approved clinic 6 to 12 weeks before leaving, and says you need it at least 10 days before you travel. On return, Australia may ask for your certificate if you stayed overnight in a risk country within 6 days of arriving, though you can still enter without one. Smartraveller says malaria is widespread except in Nairobi and above 2,500 meters, so ask a travel doctor about prevention.

What Smartraveller says about safety

Smartraveller’s overall level for Kenya is “Exercise a high degree of caution” because of terrorism and violent crime, with higher levels in some areas. It advises against travel to the Somalia border region, including all of Mandera and Garissa counties, and says to reconsider travel to Lamu County and parts of Tana River and Kilifi counties. The 10-day route (Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and the Maasai Mara) is outside those two categories. Smartraveller’s fuller advice also mentions banditry and cattle rustling in parts of the North and Central Rift, including Laikipia and Samburu counties, and tells travelers to get security advice from their tour operator. Ol Pejeta is in Laikipia and Samburu is on our northern leg, so ask us for current conditions before you book.

One current notice: as of 9 October 2026, Smartraveller reports that an Ebola case was confirmed in Kenya on 6 October, and that travelers arriving from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or another high-risk African country may face enhanced health screening. Read the live Kenya advice before you book and again before you fly, because entry conditions can change at short notice.
