When is the best time for a Maasai Mara safari, and will it be crowded?

Every month has big cats; what changes is crowds, grass and rain. July to October is peak season: the great migration and the most visitors, so book early. Late December to early January is also busy. The reserve limits every sighting to five vehicles, and your guide will move on to a quieter spot if one is crowded. January to March is usually dry and good for big cats. April and May bring the long rains: the fewest visitors, lush grass and our lowest prices, but muddy tracks and some camps closed for the season (we tell you which are open). June is usually drier, and November can bring short rains.

Can we change the route, the length or the camp?

Yes. This itinerary is a starting point, not a fixed package. You can add nights, fly one way or both instead of driving (about an hour in the air; light aircraft usually limit luggage to 15 kg per person including hand luggage, in soft bags), change the comfort level, ask for a camp you have read about, or join it to Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru or the beach. Every trip is private, so it starts on any day that suits you, subject to camp availability.

Is this safari suitable for children, seniors or anyone with limited mobility?

Yes, with the right set-up. The Maasai Mara National Reserve has no minimum age, and Sarova Mara Game Camp has family tents, though some smaller camps set their own age limits, so tell us your children's ages. Game drives are flexible, so you can head back to camp when the children or grandparents have had enough. The road days are long, about 5 to 6 hours each way plus stops, so for young children, seniors or anyone with limited mobility we suggest flying in. We confirm tent access and distances to the dining area with your quote. Balloon operators set their own minimum age, which we confirm for your date.

What vehicle and guide will we have?

A 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, used only by your group, and a professional English-speaking driver-guide who stays with you throughout. The roof lifts so you can stand for a clear view and steady photos. A Land Cruiser seats a small group, and we confirm how many travellers fit in your quote. Tell us if you would like a guide who speaks another language and we will match one where we can. If you fly in, game drives are usually in the camp's own vehicles, often shared with other guests; ask us for a private vehicle if you would rather keep it to yourselves.

What is the difference between Budget, Midrange and Luxury?

The route, vehicle and guide stay the same; the camp changes. Midrange is our standard: Sarova Mara Game Camp, a large, comfortable tented camp inside the reserve with a pool and a spa, which we would call upper-midrange. Budget means a simpler tented camp just outside the reserve near Sekenani Gate, such as Oldarpoi Mara Camp, where you enter the reserve through the gate each morning. Luxury means a smaller, more personal camp with larger tents, finer food and the most attentive service, inside the reserve or in a private conservancy, such as Entim Mara Camp on the Mara River. Luxury camps can be further from Sekenani Gate, so the road days may be longer; we confirm timings with your quote.

Do I need a visa for Kenya?

Most visitors, including US, UK and European passport holders, need a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before they fly. Apply online on the official government site, etakenya.go.ke, ideally at least two weeks before you travel and earlier for July to October. Every traveller, including children and infants, needs their own eTA, and your passport should be valid for at least six months after you arrive. Check the site for the current rules for your nationality. Most long-haul flights land at night, so we recommend arriving in Nairobi the day before; for the flight home, choose one that leaves after about 10 pm, or keep a Nairobi night.

What vaccinations, health and safety precautions do we need?

Check with your travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before you go. The Maasai Mara is a malaria area, so ask about antimalarial tablets and pack insect repellent. Ask too about yellow fever: some health authorities recommend the vaccine for travel in Kenya, and you may be asked for a certificate if you arrive from, or spend more than 12 hours in transit through, a country with yellow fever risk. On safari your driver-guide manages every wildlife encounter, so stay in the vehicle unless told otherwise, and camps normally escort guests to their tents after dark. Bring layers, as early mornings are cool, plus a hat and sun cream for the day.

Big Five and Maasai culture, in three days. The Maasai Mara (also written Masai Mara) is Kenya’s best-known reserve: open grassland, flat-topped acacias and some of the best big-cat viewing in Africa. You spend two nights inside the reserve, with an afternoon game drive on arrival, a full day on the plains with a packed lunch, and a morning in a Maasai village before the drive back to Nairobi.

You travel privately, in a 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and your own driver-guide, so the pace is yours and not a group’s. Lions are almost certain, elephant and buffalo likely, a leopard takes some luck, and rhino are rare here (more in the overview). Why two nights in the Mara works

Two nights is the shortest stay that lets the Mara show you what it does. Day one gives you the afternoon drive, when the heat fades and the cats begin to move. Day two is a full day on the plains. Day three adds a morning of culture before the road back to Nairobi. Sarova Mara Game Camp sits inside the reserve, so you start each drive already among the wildlife.

What you can expect to see

Lions are the Mara’s signature, with prides on the open plains that are often a short drive from camp. Cheetahs hunt the short grass, elephants and buffalo move between the thickets and the rivers, and leopards keep to the riverside trees. Giraffe, zebra, topi, gazelles and hippos fill the gaps between big sightings, and more than 450 bird species have been recorded in the reserve. From July to October the wildebeest and zebra of the great migration arrive from Tanzania’s Serengeti.

The Big Five, honestly

Lion, elephant and buffalo are seen on most safaris here, and a leopard is a matter of patience and luck. Rhino are the exception. The Mara has only a small population of black rhino, they keep to thick bush, and few visitors see one on a short trip. We would rather tell you that now than promise it. If rhino matter to you, add Lake Nakuru National Park, where both black and white rhino are far easier to find.

The camp

Sarova Mara Game Camp is a large, comfortable permanent tented camp inside the reserve, a few minutes’ drive from Sekenani Gate on the eastern side. It has about 75 tents, a swimming pool, a spa and a bar and restaurant, so it feels more like a well-run lodge than a small bush camp. We class it as upper-midrange. If you would prefer a smaller, more exclusive camp, we can move you to one.

The road, honestly

The drive from Nairobi is about 260 km and takes 5 to 6 hours with a break, on tarmac almost all the way to Narok and on towards Sekenani Gate, then a short, bumpy track to camp. Days one and three are therefore travel days, with stops at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint (weather and traffic permitting) and in Narok. If that is too much, fly one way or both from Wilson Airport: about an hour in the air, and the airstrip is about 20 minutes from camp.

Make it yours

Fly in from Wilson Airport: scheduled light aircraft leave Nairobi’s Wilson Airport daily for the Mara. Fly one way or both. Luggage is usually limited to 15 kg per person including hand luggage, in soft bags.
Move the camp up or down: choose a smaller, more personal camp on the Mara River inside the reserve, or in a private conservancy, or a simpler camp near Sekenani Gate for a lower price. The route, vehicle and guide stay the same.
Add a night: a third night makes it a 4-day safari with two full days on the plains, and more time to reach the Mara River in migration season.
Add a lake on the way back: a night at Lake Naivasha, with a boat ride among the hippos, or Lake Nakuru National Park for rhino and flamingo country.
Bring the family: Sarova has family tents, and other camps have interconnecting rooms. Tell us your children’s ages and we match the camp.
Watch the sun rise from a balloon: the optional dawn flight over the plains can be added on day two.

Optional extras

Hot-air balloon safari at dawn ($450 per person): Offered on day 2. You are collected at around 5 am, spend about an hour over the plains at sunrise and usually land to a bush breakfast. Flights depend on the weather. Book before you travel, as July to October fills early. The operator sets a minimum age, which we confirm for your date.
Maasai village entry fee ($30 per person): The village visit is arranged for you on day 3 as part of the programme. Only the entry fee is extra, and it is paid on the day.

Day 01 :

Nairobi to the Maasai Mara (about 260 km, 5–6 hrs)

Sun set between Mount Longonot and Kijabe Hill in the Great Rift Valley.

Your driver-guide collects you early from your Nairobi hotel or from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), usually around 6:30 am. Within the hour the city gives way to the edge of the Great Rift Valley and, weather and traffic permitting, you stop at a viewpoint where the escarpment drops away to the valley floor. From there the road runs through Maasai grazing country to Narok, the last big town, for a break, and on to the reserve.

You reach Sarova Mara Game Camp in time for lunch and have a little time to settle into your tent. Then comes the drive that makes day one worth the road. From about 4 pm the heat fades, lions that have slept through the day begin to stir, herds drift towards water and the low light turns the grass gold. It is the best light of the day for photographs, and it tunes your eye for the full day ahead.

You return to camp at dusk for dinner. After dark you may hear hyenas whooping and lions calling out on the plains. If you fly in instead, you leave Wilson Airport in the morning and reach camp in time for lunch, with luggage limited to 15 kg per person in soft bags.

Day 02 :

Full Day Game Drive in the Maasai Mara

Rise early. The plains at dawn are the Mara at its most generous: cool air, long shadows across the grass and predators still moving after a night's hunting. Lions often call around first and last light, so listen for them as you set out with a packed lunch in the vehicle. If you have booked the optional balloon, you leave camp in the dark at around 5 am instead, drift over the plains for about an hour as the sun comes up, and land to a bush breakfast before joining your guide. Balloon flights depend on the weather.

A full day with a packed lunch changes what is possible. You are not tied to camp meal times, so you can range farther across the reserve, stay with a sighting for as long as it holds you, and look for the harder things: a cheetah scanning for gazelles from a termite mound, lions with cubs, a leopard resting in a riverside tree. From July to October a full day is also what makes the Mara River possible, where wildebeest and zebra gather to cross. Depending on where the herds are, the river can be an hour or two from camp. Nobody can promise a crossing, but your guide will read the herds and give you the best chance of one.

Your driver-guide explains what you are seeing as well as finding it: why a lioness is watching a zebra herd, how the resident herds differ from the migrating ones, why cheetahs favour the open plains. Lion, elephant and buffalo are likely, a leopard takes luck and rhino are rare, so we would not promise the full Big Five. Bird lovers have more than 450 recorded species to work through. You return to camp in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 03 :

Maasai Mara to Nairobi (about 260 km, 5–6 hrs)

After breakfast your driver-guide takes you to a traditional Maasai village near the reserve. Members of the community welcome you, show you around the homestead and talk about how they build their homes, herd cattle and share the land with wildlife. It is a chance to ask questions and to hear about customs handed down through the generations. The village entry fee is USD 30 per person and is paid on the day.

After the visit you leave the Mara and drive back to Nairobi, about 5 to 6 hours with a stop for lunch in Narok (lunch is not included) and the climb up the Rift Valley escarpment. Your driver-guide drops you at your Nairobi hotel or at JKIA, depending on your plans.

If you are flying home the same day, choose a flight that leaves after about 10 pm so that Nairobi traffic never turns the drive into a race, or keep a Nairobi night and we can book the hotel. If you fly out of the Mara instead, you land at Wilson Airport and your driver takes you on to your hotel or to JKIA.
