Masai Mara Safari Cost 2027: What a Private Trip Really Costs

Entice Africa safaris and Tour Agency

A private Masai Mara safari with Entice Africa Safaris costs from USD 1,420 per person for 3 days, from USD 2,750 for 5 days and from USD 4,500 for 7 days. Each price includes the reserve entry fee, your own 4×4 with a driver-guide, and your camp or lodge stay, and prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice. If you are still deciding how the reserve fits your trip, start with our complete Masai Mara safari guide.

The Masai Mara safari cost you pay comes down to five things: the month you travel, the Narok County entry fee, the camp tier, whether you drive or fly, and how many of you share. Below we price each one in US dollars and show what is and is not included. Our guide to Masai Mara park fees and conservancy fees goes deeper on the entry charges, and Masai Mara on a budget shows where you can save.

What our private Masai Mara safaris cost

These are three of our set Mara itineraries. All three are private, with a vehicle and driver-guide for your group alone. Each figure is a “from” price per person: a starting point for a quote, not a fixed price for your dates. Prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice.

Trip Length Where you stay From price per person Suits
3-Day Maasai Mara Roar & Roam Safari 3 days, 2 nights Two nights in the Mara, at Sarova Mara Game Camp as standard From USD 1,420 A first taste of the Mara, or a few days around a Nairobi visit
5 days Masai Mara Migration Safari 5 days, 4 nights All four nights in the Mara From USD 2,750 Three full days on the plains, timed for the migration months
7 Days Maasai Mara Migration Safari 7 days, 6 nights 3 nights in the Mara, 1 at Lake Nakuru, 2 at Amboseli From USD 4,500 The Mara plus Lake Nakuru and Amboseli National Park

How to read these “from” prices

All three figures use the same basis: the midrange lodge level, in low season, for two people sharing. Read each one as the bottom of a range, not the typical total.

  • 3 days: USD 1,420 per person covers two nights in the Mara. Travelers on their own pay more per person, and we quote families and larger groups on request.
  • 5 days: USD 2,750 per person covers four nights in the Mara. Other months cost more, and July to October costs the most.
  • 7 days: USD 4,500 per person covers three nights in the Mara, one at Lake Nakuru and two at Amboseli. It is the longest trip and visits two other parks.

Divided by days, the “from” prices come to about USD 473, USD 550 and USD 643 per person per day. Treat that as a rough guide: the trips use different camps and rate bands, and the 7-day trip spends just three nights in the Mara.

What drives the cost of a Masai Mara safari

Season

The wildebeest herds are usually in the Mara from about July to October, and the timing moves with the rains. July to October costs more than April and May, and the exact rate bands differ from trip to trip and camp to camp. January to March is usually dry and good for big cats. April and May bring the long rains: the fewest visitors and our lowest prices, but muddy tracks and some camps closed. Late December and early January are busy too.

The reserve entry fee

Narok County Government sets the fee for the Masai Mara National Reserve, and it is charged per person for each day you are inside. The county has used a two-rate system since 2024. The 2026 rates for visitors from outside Africa are below.

Visitor January to June July to December
Non-resident adult USD 100 per day USD 200 per day
Non-resident child, 9 to 17 USD 50 per day USD 50 per day
Younger children Free Free

Children aged 9 to 17 pay USD 50 and younger children are free; sources differ on whether age 8 is free, so confirm that with your operator. Four days of tickets at the high-season rate come to USD 800 per adult, against USD 400 in the first half of the year.

Each ticket is valid for 12 hours, from 6 am to 6 pm, whatever time you enter, and it does not carry over overnight. That means every day inside the reserve needs its own ticket. Guests lodged outside the reserve pay the daily fee on each day they enter. On departure morning, reports differ: Kenyans.co.ke says guests leaving by road must exit by 10 am or pay an extra entry fee, while a Governors’ Camp notice puts the cut-off at 11 am and exempts guests on the morning flight schedule. The same notice says a balloon flight inside the Mara Triangle or Mara Conservancy area on departure morning also needs a full-day fee. Ask how the rule applies to your departure.

The Mara Triangle in the west is managed by the Mara Conservancy, which sells its own 12-hour ticket. Visitors staying inside the Triangle pay at Purungat Bridge, not at Sekenani Gate. We could not read the Conservancy’s 2026 tables, and its 2023 notice used the same USD 100 and USD 200 non-resident figures, so check with the Mara Conservancy if your camp sits in the Triangle.

As of October 2026 we have not seen an official Narok County schedule for 2027, and the county has changed the rules before, so your quote confirms the fee for your dates. Fees last verified: October 2026.

Camp tier and location

The route, vehicle and guide stay much the same across our trips; the camp is what moves the price. On the 3-day trip the standard camp is Sarova Mara Game Camp, a tented camp inside the reserve. A simpler camp near Sekenani Gate costs less, and you enter the reserve through the gate each morning. A smaller camp on the Mara River or in a private conservancy costs more. Nightly camp rates change by season and camp, so your quote itemises them.

Private conservancies charge a separate conservancy fee, which may sit inside the camp rate or be listed on top. One travel-company guide puts the non-resident adult fee at USD 80 to 120 and the child fee at USD 45 to 75, but we found no official tariff, and sources differ on whether it is charged per day or per night. Ask every camp whether the fee is in the rate.

Road or fly-in

Driving from Nairobi takes 5 to 6 hours each way, so on a 3-day trip much of days 1 and 3 is spent on the road. Scheduled light aircraft from Wilson Airport take 45 to 60 minutes in the air and cost more than the drive. Light aircraft limit baggage weight, so check the allowance before you pack. Flight prices vary, so we price driving, flying one way and flying both ways in your quote.

Group size and room sharing

A private safari shares one vehicle and guide among your group, so the price per person falls as more people travel. Solo travelers pay the most.

How many days should you plan?

A short trip is cheaper in total, but the road takes a big share of it.

  • 3 days: one full day on the plains, with the drive taking up much of days 1 and 3. It suits a first taste of the Mara or a tight schedule.
  • 5 days: three full days in the reserve, enough for a river day, a plains day and a flexible day.
  • 7 days: three nights in the Mara, then Lake Nakuru for rhino and flamingos and Amboseli for elephants. It costs the most because it is the longest and covers two other parks.

On a fixed budget, a 5-day trip in a quieter month can give you more days on the plains than a 3-day trip in August.

Ways to lower the cost without spoiling the trip

  1. Move your dates. The reserve fee is half as much from January to June as from July to December, and April and May are our lowest-priced months, with the long rains.
  2. Travel with three or more people. The vehicle and guide are shared, so each person pays less.
  3. Choose a simpler camp. A camp near a reserve gate costs less than one deep inside or in a private conservancy.
  4. Drive both ways. It takes longer but costs less than flying.
  5. Decide on extras before you book. The balloon flight is USD 550 per person, and the village entry fee and tips come on top, so budget for them up front.
  6. Compare quotes line by line. Check the reserve fee, conservancy fees, meals, drinks and the departure-morning exit rule.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Masai Mara safari cost per person per day?

On the three trips above, the “from” prices work out at about USD 473, USD 550 and USD 643 per person per day. That covers the reserve fee, a private 4×4 and driver-guide, accommodation and most meals. Peak dates, solo travel and conservancy camps cost more. Send us your dates for a figure that fits your trip.

Is the Masai Mara park fee included in your price?

Yes. The reserve entry fee is included on the three trips above. When you compare operators, check that theirs is too, because it is USD 100 or USD 200 per adult per day in 2026, depending on the month.

When is the cheapest time to go to the Masai Mara?

April and May give our lowest prices, with the long rains, lush grass and few visitors, though some camps close and tracks can be muddy. January to June also carries the lower reserve fee. If the migration matters most, plan for July to October and budget above the “from” prices.

Do I need a visa for Kenya?

Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before they fly. Apply only on the official government site, etakenya.go.ke. Each traveler needs their own, so check the current fee, processing time and rules for your passport there, and apply well before you travel.

Is a private safari much more expensive than a group tour?

Per person, a private trip can cost more than a seat in a shared vehicle, because you pay for a vehicle and guide for your group alone. In return you set the pace and stay with a sighting as long as it holds you. If a group price looks far lower, check the reserve fee, camp location and meals.
