Amboseli Safari Packages: How Many Days and What It Costs

Giraffes in Amboseli National Park with Mount Kilimanjaro behind

Two nights is the right length for most Amboseli safari packages. It gives you an afternoon game drive on arrival, one full day and a final morning drive, so you wake up in the park twice, when Mount Kilimanjaro is most likely to appear behind the elephants. Add a third night if the mountain photographs matter most, or pair Amboseli with the Masai Mara on a trip of five to eight days.

Our day trip from Nairobi starts at USD 420 per person, and our 6-day fly-in through Amboseli and the Masai Mara starts at USD 4,043 per person (two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates). Prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice. Below you will find how many days to spend there, what it costs, what the mountain view is really like and how to add a second park.

How many days do you need in Amboseli?

The answer depends on whether Amboseli is the whole trip or one stop in a longer one. Every Entice trip is private, with your own 4×4 and guide.

One day: a taste, not a stay

A day trip gets you to the elephants and back to Nairobi by evening. Amboseli Sopa Lodge says it is about 250 km from Nairobi, a 3 to 4 hour drive, while Imara Africa Safaris allows 4 to 5 hours. By road, that leaves a few hours of game viewing, and you arrive after the early hours when the mountain is clearest.

Our Day Trip to Amboseli starts early from Nairobi and costs from USD 420 per person, with transfers, park fees and a guide arranged. Smaller groups pay more per person, so your quote shows the rate for your party. Choose it if one spare day in Nairobi is all you have.

Two nights: the standard stay

Both operators we checked, Imara Africa Safaris and Cheetah Safaris, sell Amboseli on its own as a 3-day, 2-night trip. The format works: an evening game drive on arrival, a full day across the plains and swamps, and a final morning drive, with two chances at a clear dawn view of Kilimanjaro.

We do not publish a fixed price for an Amboseli-only stay. Send us your dates and we will quote a private two-night trip, with a lodge or tented camp that fits your budget.

Three nights or more

A third night adds another morning, and every extra dawn is another chance for a clear summit. Past three nights, a second park usually adds more variety than more days in this compact park.

Five to eight days: Amboseli plus another park

With five days or more, Amboseli becomes one stop on a longer circuit. The table compares every length, from one day to eight.

Length Nights in Amboseli What it adds Entice trip From, per person
1 day None Elephants and a possible mountain view in a single day Day Trip to Amboseli USD 420
3 days 2 A full Amboseli stay Tailor-made quote On request
6 days 2 The Masai Mara, reached by light aircraft 6-Day Fly-In Big Five Safari USD 4,043 (two sharing, January to March 2027 rates)
7 days 2 The Mara and Lake Nakuru, all by road 7 Days Maasai Mara Migration Safari USD 4,900
8 days 2 Tsavo East and Tsavo West 8 Day Best of Kenya Bush Safari Package USD 5,840

Every from-price depends on season, group size and lodge choice.

What does an Amboseli safari cost?

Five things set the price: where you sleep, when you travel, how many people share the vehicle, how you move between parks, and park fees. For non-resident visitors, the Kenya Wildlife Service fee schedule lists Amboseli at USD 90 per adult and USD 45 per child. Before 1 October 2025 the adult fee was USD 60, Tourism Update reported. HapaKenya’s report on the KWS announcement says the fees are charged per person, per 24 hours, so a longer stay adds to the bill.

What our 6-day fly-in includes

  • Five nights’ accommodation and meals as per the itinerary
  • Scheduled flights from Nairobi to Amboseli, to the Masai Mara and back to Nairobi
  • A private 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and an English-speaking driver-guide
  • All applicable park and conservancy fees
  • Soft drinks, bottled water and AMREF Flying Doctors emergency cover

The price does not include international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips, alcoholic drinks or optional activities. A sunrise hot-air balloon flight in the Mara, for example, is an optional extra at USD 550 per person. The same trip is priced by start date: the lowest rate on the trip page applies to departures from 6 January to 31 March 2027, and July to October costs more.

What other operators publish

On 9 October 2026, Cheetah Safaris listed its 3-day, 2-night Amboseli trip from an estimated USD 998 per person sharing, and Imara Africa Safaris listed its private 3-day road trip from USD 1,104 per person, full board, with park fees included. Those are starting rates for a short road trip. Before you compare any two quotes, ask:

  • Are park fees included, or charged on top?
  • Is the vehicle private, and does it have a pop-up roof?
  • Are meals and drinks included, and at what standard of lodge?

What you will see in Amboseli

Elephants

Elephants are the reason to come. The Amboseli Trust for Elephants has studied the herds here since 1972 and reports more than 3,500 elephants monitored. The park’s permanent swamps are fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro, and they pull in elephants, buffalo, hippos and a long list of birds. The Kenya Wildlife Service counts more than 400 bird species in the park. Our older Amboseli overview covers the park’s name, wildlife and the Maasai community.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is 5,895 meters high, and Tanzania National Parks calls it Africa’s highest peak. It sits across the border in Tanzania, and cloud often hides the summit. Rough Guides says sunrise and sunset are the likeliest times to see it, and that clear mornings in the rainy season can be the best of all, once rain has washed the dust from the air. Imara Africa Safaris gives 6:00 to 8:30 am as the clearest window. No operator can promise a clear view, so treat the mountain as a bonus on top of the elephants.

What Amboseli does not offer

According to SafariBookings, rhinos are absent, leopards are very rarely seen and lions are the easiest big cat to find. It also warns that the park gets very busy in high season and that dust can reduce visibility when the wind blows. A private vehicle with a pop-up roof and early starts help with the crowds. For leopard, rhino and a wider range of big cats, add the Masai Mara or Lake Nakuru.

Best time to visit Amboseli

SafariBookings lists June to October and January to February as the best months, and July to October and December to March as the busy ones. The rain timing below is from Imara Africa Safaris.

Months What to expect
January and February Dry and good for early-morning mountain views; our 6-day fly-in rate drops from 6 January
March to May Long rains, a greener park and a higher chance of cloud on the mountain
June to October Dry season, when animals gather at the swamps; dustier, busier and hazier on the mountain, and our rates are higher from July
November and December Short rains, with variable weather and views that can be good between showers

If you also want the Great Migration in the Mara, which our trip pages place at about July to October, plan the Mara leg for those months.

Combine Amboseli with the Masai Mara or Tsavo

The Mara gives you big cats and, in season, the migration. Amboseli gives you elephants and the mountain.

By air: the 6-day fly-in

This is the quickest way to link both parks. Scheduled flights link Nairobi, Amboseli and the Mara, so you skip the long road days between parks. Amboseli Sopa Lodge puts the flight from Nairobi at about 40 minutes. Light aircraft limit luggage: Safarilink, for example, allows 15 kg per person, including hand luggage, in soft bags.

Day Plan
1 Morning flight from Nairobi to Amboseli, lunch, then an afternoon game drive
2 A full day in Amboseli National Park
3 Fly to the Masai Mara, with a game drive in the afternoon
4 and 5 Morning and afternoon game drives in the Mara; a balloon flight or Maasai village visit can be added
6 Fly back to Wilson Airport in Nairobi

By road: seven days

The 7-day trip runs three nights in the Mara, one at Lake Nakuru and two in Amboseli, ending with the road back to Nairobi. It suits travelers with a week to spare who prefer to go by road. Our 7-day Kenya safari itinerary walks through each day.

With Tsavo: eight days

The 8 Day Best of Kenya Bush Safari Package links Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Amboseli, with two nights in each. According to the trip page it starts at the coast in Mombasa and ends in Nairobi, and it suits travelers who want big-country wilderness away from the busier northern circuits. From USD 5,840 per person.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for an Amboseli safari?

Two nights is the usual answer for an Amboseli-only trip, and three if you want extra chances at a clear view of Kilimanjaro. With five days or more, spend two nights in Amboseli and the rest in a second park.

How much does an Amboseli safari cost?

Our day trip from Nairobi starts at USD 420 per person, and our 6-day fly-in starts at USD 4,043 per person, two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates. Other operators list 3-day road trips from USD 998 to USD 1,104 per person. We quote an Amboseli-only stay on request, with park fees itemized.

Can you see Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?

Sometimes, but never on demand. Cloud tends to build around the summit as the day warms, so the mountain is most likely to show at sunrise and sunset. Staying two or three nights gives you more mornings to try.

When is the best time to visit Amboseli?

SafariBookings lists June to October and January to February as the best months. January and February combine dry weather with the lowest rate band on our 6-day fly-in.

Is an Amboseli day trip from Nairobi worth it?

It is worth it if you have one free day and want to see the elephants. By road you spend a large part of the day traveling and reach the park after the clearest hours for the mountain.

Can you combine Amboseli with the Masai Mara?

Yes. Our 6-day fly-in covers both parks by light aircraft, and the 7-day trip does it by road with a night at Lake Nakuru. Send us your dates and we will suggest the better fit.
