Choose the Masai Mara for open plains, big cats and, in the right months, the wildebeest herds; choose Laikipia for rhino, rare northern species and quieter private land. The Mara is 225 to 275 km (140 to 170 miles) from Nairobi by road depending on the gate, a 5 to 6-hour drive or a flight of about 45 minutes to an hour, while Laikipia’s gateway town, Nanyuki, is about 190 km (118 miles) away, a 3 to 3.5-hour drive. Our guides to the Masai Mara and the Laikipia conservancies go deep on each place; this page sets Laikipia vs Masai Mara side by side.
Neither is better in every way. The Mara gives you scale and a famous name; Laikipia gives you variety, space and species the Mara does not have. If you have a week or more, doing both is worth considering, and the sections below show how to decide.

Getting there from Nairobi
Both are within a day’s travel of Nairobi. The figures below come from operators, Ol Pejeta, Lewa and route planners, so read them as “about” rather than exact.
| Route | Road distance | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi to Sekenani, Talek, Oloolaimutia gates (Mara) | About 225 to 245 km | 5 to 6 hours |
| Nairobi to Oloololo (Mara Triangle) and Musiara | About 255 to 275 km | 6 to 7 hours |
| Nairobi to Nanyuki | About 190 km | 3 to 3.5 hours |
| Nairobi to Ol Pejeta | About 220 km | 4 to 4.5 hours |
| Nairobi to Lewa | About 240 km | About 4 hours |
| Nanyuki to Loisaba | About 80 km | 1.5 to 3 hours |

The road to the Masai Mara
The usual route runs west through Rironi, down the Mai Mahiu escarpment into the Rift Valley, then on to Narok, the last large fuel stop, with banks and supermarkets. The 86-km Narok to Sekenani road was rebuilt to bitumen and reported complete in 2021, but residents blocked it in July 2026 over its condition, and KeNHA reported flooding on the Mai Mahiu-Suswa-Narok road in April 2026. Ask us for current conditions before you travel. In the rains, allow about an extra hour for mud, and start early, because gates close in the early evening.
The road to Laikipia
From Nairobi the road follows the Thika Superhighway through Thika, Karatina, Nyeri and Naro Moru to Nanyuki. North of Nanyuki, times depend on the conservancy. Sources put Loisaba anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours from Nanyuki, depending on the road and the lodge, and road transfers between northern properties can run from two hours to five or six. That is why most Laikipia itineraries pick one or two conservancies rather than many.
Flying
AirKenya says some safari destinations take 5 to 7 hours by road against 45 minutes by air to the Mara, and lodge operator &Beyond puts scheduled flights from Wilson Airport at around an hour. That turns the Mara into a morning journey.
Landscape and wildlife: migration or rhinos?
The Masai Mara
The reserve covers 1,510 km2 in Narok County and runs on into the Serengeti. The Mara River rises on the Mau Escarpment, crosses the reserve and drains into Lake Victoria. The Mara Triangle, 510 km2 west of the river and bounded by the 400-m Oloololo Escarpment, is managed by the not-for-profit Mara Conservancy on behalf of the county government; Narok County Government runs the rest. You come for lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and the plains herds, and because the reserve is contiguous with the Serengeti, the migration moves in and out of the Mara with the rains. Timing varies from year to year, so ask us what to expect for your dates. Sightings are never certain.
Laikipia
Laikipia is a plateau formed from volcanic rock, on the Rift Valley escarpment north of Mount Kenya. It has no national park or national reserve. Wildlife lives on private ranches, community land and conservancies, and the lead author of a 2018 study of private land in the county said Laikipia hosts about 10 percent of Kenya’s wildlife. The Laikipia Conservancies Association lists 24 member conservancies on 350,000 hectares, roughly a third to two-fifths of the county by our arithmetic from two sources. There is no wildebeest migration here. You come for rhino, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and wild dog, alongside lion, leopard and elephant.
Ol Pejeta vs Masai Mara
Ol Pejeta is the Laikipia conservancy most travellers ask about. At about 220 km and a 4 to 4.5-hour drive by its own figures, it is a shorter journey than any Mara gate. Pick Ol Pejeta for rhino; pick the Mara for the scale of the plains and the migration.
Activities and crowds
In the Mara the core activity is the game drive, with an optional hot-air balloon flight at USD 550 per person and a Maasai village visit (USD 30 paid on the day on our 3-day trip, included on the 10-day trip). Laikipia properties set their own menu, and some add walking safaris or night drives. Ask us what each camp offers.
Official figures reported by Business Daily from Kenya’s Economic Survey 2026 put Maasai Mara visits at 420,000 in 2023, 343,000 in 2024 and 213,000 in 2025. Popular sightings and river crossings can still draw several vehicles. Laikipia has no comparable gate count because it has no national park; visitors spread across private and community land, and each conservancy writes its own vehicle rules. Loisaba, for example, allows only 4×4 vehicles in green or brown colours.
What it costs
Neither destination has one price. Prices are per person and depend on season, group size and lodge choice. For a Laikipia-only stay, ask for a tailor-made quote.

See how we combine the two
8 Days Ol Pejeta Masai Mara Amboseli Luxury Kenya Safari: for travellers who want Laikipia’s rhino and the Mara’s plains in one trip. From USD 10,270 per person.
10-Day Kenya Safari: Samburu to the Maasai Mara: for travellers who want northern Kenya and then the Mara in ten days. From USD 5,100 per person.
When to go
The two places share a rainy-season pattern, so the wet months do not decide between them. Laikipia’s long rains run from March to May and its short rains in October and November, and areas near the Aberdares and Mount Kenya also get rain from June to August. Mara operators advise adding about an hour of travel time for mud in April, May and November. What does separate them is the migration: the herds are in the Mara for only part of the year, so confirm timing with us before you build a trip around it. Laikipia’s wildlife is resident, so no single month decides that trip.
Who each safari suits
Choose the Masai Mara if
- this is your first safari and you want plains, big cats and wide skies
- you want to see the migration, with timing confirmed first
- you have only three or four days, since a flight makes a short trip workable
- a hot-air balloon flight is on your list
Choose Laikipia if
- rhino and rare species such as Grevy’s zebra matter more to you than the migration
- you want a shorter drive, about 3 to 3.5 hours to Nanyuki
- you would like walking or night drives, where a camp offers them
- you have been to the Mara before and want a different Kenya
Can you combine Laikipia and the Masai Mara?
Yes, and with a week or more it is often the sensible answer to Laikipia or Masai Mara. Do not drive between them: the road from Nanyuki to the Mara is about 375 km and a route planner puts it at over 7 hours, while AirKenya Express flies the route in about 1 hour 15 minutes. A typical plan is a few nights in one or two Laikipia conservancies, a flight, then a few nights in the Mara. Read Laikipia and Masai Mara safari itineraries for 7 to 12 days for how the days split, and Northern Kenya safari: Samburu, Ol Pejeta and Laikipia in 7 to 9 days for the Laikipia half. Frequently asked questions
Laikipia or Masai Mara: which is better for a first safari?
The Mara is the more familiar first safari: open plains, a short flight from Nairobi and, in the right months, the migration. Laikipia suits first-timers who care most about rhino and a quieter setting, and it makes a rewarding second safari.
How far is each from Nairobi?
The Mara is 225 to 275 km by road, 5 to 7 hours depending on the gate, or about 45 minutes to an hour by air. Nanyuki is about 190 km, 3 to 3.5 hours, and Ol Pejeta about 220 km, 4 to 4.5 hours.
Can I see the wildebeest migration in Laikipia?
No. The migration is a Mara and Serengeti event. Laikipia’s wildlife is resident, and the draw there is rhino and rarer species.
Which is quieter?
Laikipia usually feels quieter because wildlife is spread across private and community land with each conservancy setting its own rules. The Mara recorded 213,000 visits in 2025 according to the Economic Survey 2026, and popular sightings can gather several vehicles.
Can I visit both on one trip?
Yes. Fly rather than drive: the road between Nanyuki and the Mara is over 7 hours by route planner, against about 1 hour 15 minutes on AirKenya Express. Our 7 to 12-day itineraries guide shows how to split the days.
Do the rains affect the choice?
Both have rain from March to May and in October and November, so the rains do not favour either. In the Mara, allow about an extra hour of road time for mud in April, May and November, and ask us for current road conditions.
