3-Day Masai Mara Safari from Nairobi: Private Trip Guide

Entice Africa safaris and Tour Agency

A 3-day Masai Mara safari from Nairobi gives you two nights inside the reserve, an afternoon game drive, one full day on the plains and a Maasai village visit, with about 260 km (160 miles) of road at each end. It works well as a short first safari, a trip during a Nairobi stopover or a safari before a beach stay, as long as you plan for about a day and a half of game viewing, not three days. Our private version starts from USD 1,420 per person, and the price depends on season, group size and lodge choice.

This guide covers each day, what the price includes, road versus flight, and when four or five days is the better choice. Masai Mara and Maasai Mara are the same reserve, and prices are in US dollars per person.

How the three days run

Day 1: Nairobi to the Mara

Your driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel or JKIA, usually around 6:30 am. The road drops toward the Great Rift Valley, where you stop at a viewpoint if weather and traffic allow, then crosses Maasai grazing country to Narok for a break before the reserve. Allow 5 to 6 hours in all. You reach Sarova Mara Game Camp, or a similar camp, in time for lunch, and from about 4 pm you are out on the first game drive. Budget camps, which sit just outside the reserve gate, and luxury camps are available on request.

Plan to land in Nairobi the day before. Some long-haul flights land overnight, and a 6:30 am pickup straight off a flight is a hard start. We can book the hotel, though it is not in the trip price.

Day 2: a full day in the reserve

You leave early with a packed lunch and range across the reserve, staying with a sighting for as long as you like because the vehicle is yours alone. From July to October the Mara River can be part of the day, depending on where the herds are. You return to camp for dinner. A dawn hot-air balloon flight is optional at USD 550 per person.

Day 3: a Maasai village and the drive back

After breakfast you visit a traditional Maasai village near the reserve. The entry fee is USD 30 per person, paid on the day. Then you drive back to Nairobi, another 5 to 6 hours with a lunch stop in Narok, and your guide drops you at your hotel or JKIA. The itinerary has no game drive on Day 3. If you fly home that evening, choose a flight that leaves after about 10 pm.

3-day Masai Mara safari price: what is included

The 3-Day Maasai Mara Roar & Roam Safari starts from USD 1,420 per person for a private trip. That is the Midrange rate for April to June, for two people sharing, a starting point and not a quote for your dates. Peak months and late December cost more, and a solo traveler pays more per person (Midrange from USD 1,650) than a pair, because the vehicle, guide and room are split among fewer people.

Included

  • 2 nights in a tented camp in the Mara: Sarova Mara Game Camp as standard
  • Meals as listed in the itinerary, and drinking water
  • Masai Mara National Reserve entrance fees
  • Your own 4×4 Land Cruiser and an English-speaking driver-guide
  • Pickup on Day 1 and drop-off on Day 3, at your Nairobi hotel or JKIA

Not included

  • International flights, and travel and medical insurance
  • The village entry fee (USD 30 per person) and the optional balloon flight (USD 550 per person)
  • Breakfast on Day 1, lunch and dinner on Day 3, drinks other than water, and tips
  • Hotel nights in Nairobi before or after the safari

Shared tour or private trip?

Some 3-day listings on booking sites are shared departures. One Headout listing we read puts up to eight guests in a vehicle and lists the reserve fee as an extra, at USD 100 per adult per day from January to June and USD 200 from July to December. Business Daily reported the same two rates in May 2026. A shared departure can cost less per person; the trade-off is a fixed timetable and a vehicle you do not control. Our price is for a private trip and includes the reserve fee, and we confirm the rate for your dates in your quote. For more on costs, see our Masai Mara safari cost guide.

Road or flight: how to reach the Mara

Our 3-day trip goes by road by default. Across Days 1 and 3 that is roughly 10 to 12 hours in the vehicle. The alternative is to fly from Wilson Airport, Nairobi’s light-aircraft airport, which is separate from JKIA. Safarilink’s timetable shows about one hour from Wilson to the Mara. You can fly one way or both, and we price either version in your quote.

If you would rather see the Mara and Amboseli entirely by air, our 6-Day Fly-In Big Five Safari is from USD 4,043 per person, two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates.

Is three days enough?

For a first safari, yes, with limits worth knowing before you book.

What three days does well

A full day with a packed lunch is a proper safari day: you can range farther and stay with a sighting as long as it holds you. Lions are almost certain, elephant and buffalo likely, a leopard takes some luck, and rhino are rare here, so we would not promise the full Big Five.

What it does not do

You get one afternoon drive and one full day, and no sunrise drive on Day 3. A river crossing cannot be scheduled, so one day gives you a chance of seeing the herds at the Mara River, not a promise. If a crossing is your main goal, give yourself more nights.

When to go

Every month has big cats. What changes is crowds, grass and rain. January to March is usually dry. April and May bring the long rains: the fewest visitors and our lowest prices, but muddy tracks and some camps closed for the season. July to October is the busiest period, so ask early. Governors’ Camp says the herds begin to arrive in July and gather at the river by August, but that it cannot promise the timing.

Who a 3-day Masai Mara safari suits

  • Stopovers. If you can pause in Nairobi for three or four days, the trip starts and ends at JKIA or your hotel, so it slots between flights. For a shorter stop, read our guide to JKIA layover tours.
  • A safari before the beach. Do the Mara first and finish on the sand. Tell us you want the coast afterward and we will plan the move and price the beach nights in one quote. If you prefer a ready-made plan, our 14-Day Kenya Safari & Diani Beach Holiday covers the Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo, then three nights on Diani Beach, from USD 5,850 per person (the April to June rate with Midrange lodges, two sharing; Budget from USD 5,000, other seasons and Luxury cost more).
  • Families and older travelers, by air. The road days are long, so we suggest flying in at least one direction.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough for the Masai Mara?

It is enough for a first look: one afternoon drive, one full day and a village visit. It is not enough for a relaxed pace or several early drives, so add a fourth or fifth night if you want those.

How long is the drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara?

About 260 km. We plan 5 to 6 hours each way, with a Rift Valley viewpoint and a break in Narok, and traffic or weather can add time. Flying from Wilson Airport takes about an hour.

Is it suitable for children and older travelers?

Yes. The reserve has no minimum age, and Sarova Mara Game Camp has family tents, though some smaller camps set their own age limits. Game drives are flexible, so you can head back to camp early. Because of the long road days, we suggest flying in for young children and anyone with limited mobility.

Can I add a hot-air balloon flight?

Yes. The optional dawn flight is USD 550 per person and runs on Day 2. You leave camp around 5 am and spend about an hour over the plains. Flights depend on the weather, the operator sets a minimum age, and July to October fills early, so mention it when you ask for your quote.

What do I need to enter Kenya?

US and UK citizens need an eTA before they fly, and each traveler applies separately. Other nationalities should check the requirement on the official site, etakenya.go.ke. Apply only there: the standard fee starts at USD 30, and applications are generally processed within three business days. The UK government advises applying at least 2 weeks before departure, and both it and the US State Department say a passport needs 6 months’ validity after arrival and 2 blank pages. The UK advice also says that since 5 October 2026, eTA applicants must buy travel health insurance as part of the application. The rule is new, so check the portal’s current instructions before you pay.

Do I need malaria tablets or a yellow fever vaccine?

The Mara is a malaria area. The US CDC lists all areas of Kenya below 2,500 m, including game parks, as risk areas, recommends prescription antimalarials and advises seeing a doctor at least a month before you travel. It also recommends the yellow fever vaccine for most travelers to Kenya. It says the vaccine is not required for direct travel from the US, but is required if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk, and the UK government says you then need a vaccination certificate. Your doctor or a travel clinic can advise on both.
