Masai Mara From Nairobi: Distance, Drive Time and Flights

Entice Africa safaris and Tour Agency

The Masai Mara is about 225 to 275 km (140 to 170 miles) from Nairobi by road, depending on the gate. Plan on a 5 to 6-hour drive to Sekenani and the eastern gates and 6 to 7 hours to Musiara or the Mara Triangle, or on a 45 to 60-minute scheduled flight from Wilson Airport. Rain, roadworks and Narok traffic can add time on the road, and flights that call at several airstrips run longer than the headline figure.

This guide gives the distance to each gate, the route and rest stops, the state of the road in October 2026, how the flights work and how the two options compare on time and cost. The reserve is also spelled Maasai Mara; it is the same place. For the wider picture, read our complete guide to a Masai Mara safari.

Distance from Nairobi to each Masai Mara gate

The table shows road distances from Nairobi City Hall, worked out with the OpenStreetMap-based OSRM routing engine on 25 October 2026, beside the drive time operators tell travelers to plan for. The map estimate assumes free-flowing traffic and no stops, so a real day on the road is longer. Operators quote slightly different kilometre figures for some gates (about 275 km to Oloololo, for example), so treat every distance as approximate.

Gate or town Where it is Road km Miles Map estimate, no traffic or stops Plan for
Narok town Last major town before the reserve 141 88 1 h 44 2.5 to 4 hours
Sekenani Gate East, Narok side 227 141 3 h 18 5.5 to 6 hours
Oloolaimutia Gate South-east, 12 km past Sekenani 242 150 3 h 40 About 6 hours
Talek Gate Centre-east 246 153 4 h 03 5.5 to 6 hours
Musiara Gate North About 265 (operator figure) 165 Not calculated 6 to 6.5 hours
Oloololo Gate Mara Triangle, west 253 157 4 h 05 6 to 6.5 hours

Sekenani is the closest main gate. The road from Narok to Musiara and Oloololo is rougher, calls for a 4×4 and adds about 30 minutes, according to one operator.

Camps in the private conservancies around the reserve are reached by the same road to Narok and then to the gate or track nearest the camp, so the distance depends on the camp. Beyond the gates the roads are graded murram, so allow extra time for the last stretch. Your itinerary gives the transfer time for your actual camp. Our Masai Mara map guide shows the regions, gates, rivers and airstrips.

The route by road: Nairobi, the Rift Valley and Narok

  1. Nairobi to Rironi. You leave Nairobi heading west. Traffic is the main unknown here, which is why one operator puts Nairobi to Narok at anything from 2.5 to about 4 hours.
  2. The escarpment and the Rift Valley. At Rironi the road drops down the Mai Mahiu escarpment onto the floor of the Great Rift Valley, with wide views. Mount Longonot is visible beside the road toward Naivasha, which is about 88 km (54 miles) from Nairobi.
  3. Mai Mahiu, Suswa and Narok. The road crosses open Maasai grazing country to Narok, 141 km from Nairobi City Hall and 1,827 m (5,997 ft) above sea level. Narok is the county capital and the last major town on the way.
  4. Narok to the gate. For Sekenani, Talek and Oloolaimutia, follow the Narok to Sekenani road, about 86 km (54 miles), and allow 1 to 2 hours. Oloolaimutia is a further 12 km past Sekenani. For Musiara or Oloololo, take the Aitong road from Narok instead.

Rest stops

A roadside viewpoint over the Rift Valley, with curio stalls, sits on the escarpment road. It is a good photo stop, but facilities are limited. Narok is the place for a proper break: it has the last large fuel stop, banks and supermarkets before the park, according to one operator guide.

When to leave Nairobi

Leave early. Your driver-guide collects you at about 6:30 am on our 3-day trip, which reaches camp in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive. A late start has a second cost: the same operator guide says there is no entry to the reserve after 6:30 pm and guests should be in camp by 7:00 pm, so a late departure plus one hold-up on the Narok road can put you outside that window.

Road conditions now: October 2026

The road works, but published reports as of late October 2026 show weak spots.

  • Narok to Sekenani (about 86 km): rebuilt to bitumen and reported complete in June 2021. On 30 July 2026 residents blocked it to protest its deteriorating condition, and tourists, students and motorists were stranded for more than six hours. Our summary is paved but in poor repair in places. Some operator pages still describe the last 75 km as murram, so ask for current conditions.
  • Mai Mahiu to Suswa to Narok: a March 2026 flood closure reopened on 13 March. In April 2026 the highways authority, KeNHA, reported flooding near Kedong Ranch and advised the Narok to Njoro to Nakuru road as the alternative.
  • Rironi to Mai Mahiu to Naivasha: on 15 September 2026 KeNHA was patching potholes on the escarpment, with delays possible. The Transport Cabinet Secretary said dualling to Naivasha would be finished by 30 October 2026. That is a promise, not a confirmed opening, so do not plan around it.
  • Rain: operators advise adding about an hour for mud in April, May and November.

A road day therefore carries some risk of delay. If you drive back on your last day, we suggest an international flight that leaves after about 10 pm, or a night in Nairobi.

Flying from Nairobi: Wilson Airport, airlines and flight time

Safari flights leave from Wilson Airport (code WIL) in Lang’ata, about 8 km from the city centre, not from Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA). AirKenya says it runs no scheduled flights from JKIA. Safarilink puts Wilson 18 km (11 miles) from JKIA: about 25 minutes by road, but allow at least an hour in the morning and evening rush.

Safarilink, AirKenya and Mombasa Air Safari run scheduled flights from Wilson to the Mara, and some camp groups fly their own guests. AirKenya gives 45 minutes to the Mara, while &Beyond, a lodge operator, says flights average around one hour. Safarilink says timings can vary by up to 40 minutes with the aircraft’s routing, and its schedule shows up to 1 hour 20 minutes on a multi-stop flight back to Wilson. A safe rule is 45 to 60 minutes, longer with stops.

Safarilink and AirKenya compared

Detail Safarilink AirKenya
Mara airstrips served “Eight major airstrips” Nine
Check-in at Wilson Closes 60 minutes before departure Arrive 90 to 60 minutes before; closes 30 minutes before
Fares USD 260 one way, USD 425 return per person, before taxes (2026 fare table) In USD, inclusive of taxes; broadly the same through the year
Children Ages 2 to 12 pay 75% of the adult fare Ages 2 to 11 pay 70%; under 2 on a lap fly free
Extra baggage Excess Kshs 400 per kg (about USD 4) Excess USD 5 per kg, subject to space

Fees last verified: October 2026. One operator guide puts one-way fares from Nairobi at roughly USD 200 to 350, depending on airline and season, so ask for the current fare when you book. Peak season runs roughly July to October and December to March, and AirKenya asks for full payment 21 days before travel in peak season.

Airstrips: which one you land on

The Mara has no single airport. The airlines between them serve about a dozen airstrips, among them Keekorok in the south-east near Sekenani Gate, Ol Kiombo in the centre-east, Mara Serena in the Mara Triangle, Musiara in the north, and Kichwa Tembo below the Oloololo Escarpment. Most flights make one or two stops, and the pilot sets the landing order each morning. Landing at the wrong strip can mean a transfer of about two hours on unpaved roads, so confirm yours with your camp. These details come from an operator directory. For more, read our guide to a Masai Mara fly-in safari.

Luggage on scheduled flights

Both airlines cap luggage at 15 kg (33 lb) per person, hand baggage included, in soft-sided bags, because the luggage compartments are small and irregular in shape.

  • Extra weight: both airlines sell a freight seat that carries an extra 75 kg. AirKenya also sells bundles of 5 kg for USD 30 or 10 kg for USD 50 if you book 48 hours ahead.
  • Storage: both offer free luggage storage at Wilson, so you can leave spare bags there or at your Nairobi hotel.
  • Batteries and drones: keep spare lithium batteries and power banks in hand luggage. Drones are generally prohibited in national parks and reserves without permits.

Drive or fly: time and cost side by side

Detail By road By air
Time to camp 5 to 7 hours About 2 to 3 hours from arriving at Wilson (check-in, 45 to 80 minutes in the air, a short airstrip transfer), plus the drive to Wilson
First day Reach camp for lunch, then an afternoon game drive The earliest flights land well before lunch
Luggage No airline weight limit 15 kg in a soft bag
What can go wrong Rain, potholes, protests and Narok traffic Changed routing, minimum passenger numbers and weather
Cost basis One vehicle shared by the group A fare for every seat
Item Figure
Safarilink return, Wilson to the Mara USD 425 per person, before taxes
Two travelers, return seats USD 850
Our 3-day private trip, by road From USD 1,420 per person
Our 6-day fly-in, Amboseli and the Mara From USD 4,043 per person

Do not read the gap between the last two rows as the price of flying. The 6-day trip adds a second park, more nights and flights between the parks. To compare like with like, ask us to price your own dates both ways. International flights and travel insurance are extra on both trips.

Which should you choose?

  • Two nights or fewer in the Mara: fly. The road takes 10 to 12 hours out of a very short trip. Our 2 Days 1 Night Maasai Mara Kenya Safari by Road is the shortest road option; we do not publish a price for it, so ask for a tailor-made quote.
  • Three nights or more: the drive works well, because the road is a smaller share of the trip.
  • Groups of three or more: the road tends to cost less per person, because the vehicle is shared and flights are priced per seat.
  • Children, seniors or limited mobility: fly in. Road days of 5 to 6 hours each way plus stops are long for these travelers, and both airlines discount children’s fares.
  • Heavy luggage or camera gear: drive, or buy a freight seat.
  • Drive one way, fly the other: you see the Rift Valley and Narok on one leg and skip the other.

Beyond the Mara: onward distances and combinations

From To Road km Miles Map estimate
Sekenani Gate Naivasha 211 131 3 h 05
Sekenani Gate Isebania (Tanzania border post) 171 106 3 h 51
Oloololo Gate Isebania (Tanzania border post) 91 57 1 h 34
Oloololo Gate Kisumu 255 158 3 h 34

Three combinations come up often:

  • Amboseli: AirKenya lists the flight from Wilson to Amboseli at 35 minutes, which is why the Amboseli and Mara pairing suits a fly-in trip.
  • Laikipia: Safarilink’s direct Laikipia to Mara services are suspended from 1 April to 15 June and from 1 November to 15 December, when you route through Wilson. Our Laikipia conservancies guide covers the other side of this trip.
  • Serengeti: AirKenya lists Mara to Serengeti at 2 hours 45 minutes: a flight to Migori, a road transfer with immigration, then a flight from Tarime on its sister airline, Regional Air Services.

Your first and last day

Your international flight lands at JKIA and the Mara flight leaves from Wilson. The earliest Mara flights leave at about 7:15 to 7:30 am, and by road the pickup is about 6:30 am, so plan a night in Nairobi before either.

On the way home, Mara flights reach Wilson from about 9:30 am into the afternoon. Add the transfer from Wilson to JKIA and international check-in before you choose a flight home. By road, leave the Mara early and keep a buffer for Narok and the escarpment.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Masai Mara from Nairobi?

About 225 to 275 km (140 to 170 miles) by road, depending on the gate. Sekenani Gate is about 227 km (141 miles) from central Nairobi and Oloololo Gate in the Mara Triangle about 253 km (157 miles).

How long does it take to drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara?

Plan on 5 to 6 hours to Sekenani and the eastern gates and 6 to 7 hours to Musiara and the Mara Triangle. Nairobi traffic, the state of the road and your break at Narok change the total, and operators advise adding about an hour in the rains.

How long is the flight, and which airport does it leave from?

It leaves from Wilson Airport, about 18 km from JKIA. AirKenya gives 45 minutes and other sources say about an hour. Flights back can run longer, because the aircraft may call at several airstrips.

How much does a flight to the Masai Mara cost?

Safarilink’s 2026 fare table lists USD 260 one way and USD 425 return per person, before taxes. AirKenya quotes fares in US dollars inclusive of taxes. If you want to fly, we price the flights into your quote.

How much luggage can I take on a Mara flight?

Both airlines allow 15 kg (33 lb) per person, hand baggage included, in a soft bag. You can pay for extra weight, subject to space, or book a freight seat that carries an extra 75 kg.

Is the road to the Mara good right now?

Mostly passable, with weak spots. The Narok to Sekenani road is paved but in poor repair in places, and flooding closed parts of the Mai Mahiu to Narok road in March and April 2026. Ask your operator for current conditions and the fallback route.

Can I visit the Masai Mara as a day trip from Nairobi?

Not sensibly by road, which would mean 10 to 12 hours of driving for a few hours in the reserve. By air it is possible on paper, but check-in and airstrip transfers leave little time for game drives. We recommend at least two nights in the reserve.
