Masai Mara Fly-In Safari: Airstrips, Airlines and Luggage

Safarilink Cessna 208 light aircraft at Keekorok Airstrip, Masai Mara

A Masai Mara fly-in safari starts at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, where Safarilink, AirKenya and Mombasa Air Safari fly small aircraft to airstrips in and around the reserve. The flight takes about 45 to 60 minutes (longer with stops), against roughly 225 to 275 km and 5 to 7 hours by road, and you are limited to about 15 kg of luggage in a soft bag. This guide sits alongside our complete Masai Mara safari guide.

Flying suits travellers who are short on time or linking the Mara with another park. It asks two things in return: light packing, and clarity about which airstrip your camp uses.

Which airlines fly from Wilson Airport to the Masai Mara

Three airlines run scheduled flights from Wilson to the Mara: Safarilink, AirKenya and Mombasa Air Safari. Governors Aviation flies guests of the Governors camps. AirKenya, which says it was first into the Mara in the 1970s, flies Dash 7 (49 seats), Dash 8 (36 seats) and Twin Otter (18 seats) aircraft.

Our 6-day fly-in Big Five safari to Amboseli and the Mara is from USD 4,043 per person. Prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice, and the itemised quote shows exactly what is covered.

Wilson Airport is not JKIA

Wilson is in Lang’ata, about 8 km from Nairobi city centre and 18 km from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Safarilink puts the transfer at about 25 minutes, but allow at least an hour in the morning and evening rush. AirKenya says it does not operate scheduled flights from JKIA, so leave a generous gap if you land internationally the same day.

Flight times and schedules

AirKenya gives 45 minutes from Wilson to the Mara, &Beyond says around one hour, and Safarilink’s multi-stop return can take 80 minutes. Plan on 45 to 60 minutes, longer with stops. Safarilink says timings can vary by up to 40 minutes with the aircraft’s routing, and its timetable is undated, so treat these times as indicative.

Direction Safarilink departure to arrival
Wilson to the Mara 07:30 to 08:30; 10:00 to 11:00; 14:15 to 15:15; 16:00 to 17:00
Mara to Wilson 08:30 to 09:30; 11:00 to 12:20; 15:15 to 16:15; 17:00 to 18:00

Check-in is early. AirKenya asks you to arrive 90 to 60 minutes before departure and closes check-in 30 minutes before. Safarilink’s cut-off is strictly 60 minutes before at Wilson and 30 minutes elsewhere. At a bush airstrip, be there 30 minutes before the advised departure.

Masai Mara airstrips and the areas they serve

There are about a dozen airstrips in and around the reserve. AirKenya serves nine, Safarilink speaks of eight major ones, and one operator directory counts eleven by adding Siana and Angama. Directories differ on details, so the table gives areas rather than camps, and your camp should confirm its own strip.

Airstrip Where it is
Keekorok South-east, near Sekenani Gate
Ol Kiombo Central-east, near the Talek River; busy (descriptions of its position vary)
Mara Serena Mara Triangle, west; the largest strip in the reserve
Musiara North, by Musiara Marsh
Kichwa Tembo North-west, below the Oloololo Escarpment
Olare Orok Olare Motorogi area
Mara North and Ol Seki Mara North Conservancy, and the gateway to Naboisho Conservancy
Ngerende North, near Enonkishu Conservancy
Siana and Angama Siana is east, outside the reserve; Angama is a private strip for its own guests

One operator warns that landing at the wrong strip can mean a transfer of about two hours on unpaved roads. Our Masai Mara map of regions, gates, rivers and airstrips helps you place each one.

Multi-stop flights and the transfer to camp

Most Mara flights are shared. The pilot sets the landing sequence each morning, and most flights make one or two stops, which is why a return can run longer than the outbound leg.

From the strip you drive to camp, and the length of that drive depends on where you stay. &Beyond, for example, describes about an hour in the air to its private Kichwa Tembo airstrip, then a 30-minute game drive to Bateleur Camp or Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp. Ask how long the drive is from your strip. If you change camps inside the Mara, a scheduled flight between two strips can be booked only within 24 hours of travel on Safarilink, at the price of a single Nairobi to Mara ticket.

Masai Mara luggage limit

Both main airlines allow 15 kg (33 lb) per person, hand luggage included, in soft-sided bags. The aircraft’s luggage compartments are limited and irregularly shaped, so a duffel works and a hard suitcase does not.

Item AirKenya Safarilink
Notes Personal items up to 5 kg count towards the 15 kg Check-in staff usually allow up to 2 kg of leeway
Extra freight seat 75 kg (165 lb) 75 kg, at an adult fare
Excess at check-in USD 5 per kg, subject to space Kshs 400 per kg (about USD 4)
Advance bundles 5 kg for USD 30 or 10 kg for USD 50, booked 48 hours ahead 0 to 10 kg USD 50; 11 to 20 kg USD 80; 21 to 30 kg USD 145 (2023/2024 baggage page)
Luggage storage in Nairobi Free at the Wilson terminal Free and secure at its Wilson office

Packing for a 15 kg limit

  • Use a soft duffel. AirKenya suggests a checked bag of about 60 x 45 x 33 cm and hand luggage of about 30 x 53 x 23 cm, and sells a soft bag at check-in for USD 20.
  • Carry spare lithium batteries and power banks in your hand luggage only.
  • Leave the drone at home. Drones are generally prohibited in national parks and reserves without permits.

Fares, seasons, children and changes

AirKenya quotes fares in USD, taxes included, and says prices stay broadly consistent through the year. One operator guide puts one-way fares from Nairobi at roughly USD 200 to 350 depending on airline and season. Treat that as a ballpark and ask for a current fare.

  • Seasons: Safarilink high season runs 16 December to 31 March and 1 July to 31 October. AirKenya peaks June to October and December to February.
  • Children: AirKenya children aged 2 to 11 pay 70% of the adult fare, and infants under 2 on a lap fly free. Safarilink charges 75% for ages 2 to 12.
  • Changes (AirKenya): full payment is due 14 days before travel in low season and 21 in high season. Changing 10 to 5 days out costs USD 50, and 4 days or less costs USD 100.

Fees last verified: October 2026.

Fly or drive to the Masai Mara

Factor Fly from Wilson Drive from Nairobi
Journey time 45 to 60 minutes in the air, longer with stops, plus the Wilson transfer and early check-in 5 to 6 hours to Sekenani and the eastern gates, 6 to 7 hours to the Mara Triangle and Musiara; longer in rain
Luggage 15 kg per person, soft bags No airline weight limit
Suits Short stays and trips linking parks Longer stays, bigger bags, Rift Valley views

The road has its own uncertainties. The Narok to Sekenani road was rebuilt to bitumen and reported complete in 2021, but on 30 July 2026 residents blocked it over its condition and travellers were stranded for more than six hours. In September 2026 the Mai Mahiu escarpment was being patched, with possible delays. Operators advise adding about an hour for mud in the rains, so ask for current conditions. Our guide to the Masai Mara safari from Nairobi, drive or fly compares times and costs, and our Kenya fly-in safari guide explains how it works across the country.

If the migration is the reason you are going, the 11 Day Migration Fly-in Package is from USD 7,100 per person, with prices varying by season, group size and lodge choice.

Flights to the Mara from other parks

AirKenya’s published durations from Wilson include Amboseli 35 minutes, Nanyuki 40, Lewa Downs 45, Loisaba and Samburu 55, Arusha 55 and Meru 60. Safarilink’s direct Laikipia to Mara services are suspended from 1 April to 15 June and from 1 November to 15 December, when passengers can route through Wilson. Our guide on how to get to Laikipia from Nairobi by road and air covers that side of the trip.

The Mara to Serengeti link takes about 2 hours 45 minutes with AirKenya: a flight to Migori, a road transfer with immigration, then a Regional Air Services flight from Tarime. For the coast, Safarilink’s baggage page lists routes to Mombasa, Diani, Malindi and Lamu. Tell us what you want and we will check the current routing.
