Three days (two nights) is the shortest stay that makes the Masai Mara worth the drive, and four or five days is a comfortable length for a first safari. The reserve is about 225 to 275 km (140 to 170 miles) from Nairobi, a 5 to 6-hour drive to the eastern gates or a 45 to 60-minute flight, so on a road trip the first and last days are mostly travel. If you want to see the wildebeest river crossings, plan six or seven days.
This guide shows what each length of stay gets you and how a flight changes the maths. For the wider picture of camps, wildlife and fees, read our complete Masai Mara safari guide.

At a glance: how many days for what
On a road trip, day one is mostly the drive down and the last day is mostly the drive back, so the number of full days in the Mara is the number of days minus two.
| Stay | Full days in the Mara | What you get | Entice trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 days, 1 night | None | Two game drives at most, for 10 to 12 hours of driving | 2 Days 1 Night Maasai Mara Kenya Safari by Road: tailor-made quote |
| 3 days, 2 nights | 1 | Up to four game drives | 3-Day Maasai Mara Roar & Roam Safari: from USD 1,420 per person |
| 4 days, 3 nights | 2 | Up to six game drives, with a day you do not have to rush | Tailor-made quote; see our 4-day Masai Mara guide |
| 5 days, 4 nights | 3 | Up to eight game drives, with room for a balloon flight or a village visit | 5 days Masai Mara Migration Safari: from USD 2,750 per person |
| 6 to 7 days | 4 to 5 | 10 to 12 game drives, and the best chance of a river crossing from July to October | 7 Days Maasai Mara Migration Safari: from USD 4,500 per person |
Game-drive counts assume you reach camp for an afternoon drive on day one, then follow the usual morning and afternoon routine. Entice prices are starting prices per person for a midrange lodge in low season with two people sharing, and they depend on season, group size and lodge choice.
Why the drive decides the answer
Nearly every road trip runs west out of Nairobi through Rironi, down the Mai Mahiu escarpment into the Rift Valley, then on to Narok and your gate. Narok is about 141 km (88 miles) from Nairobi City Hall and is the last large town, with fuel, banks and supermarkets. From Narok to Sekenani Gate is about 86 km (54 miles).
| Gate | Road distance from Nairobi | Usual drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Sekenani (east) | About 225 km (140 miles) | 5.5 to 6 hours |
| Talek | 230 to 246 km (143 to 153 miles) | 5.5 to 6 hours |
| Oloolaimutia (south-east) | About 240 km (150 miles) | About 6 hours |
| Musiara (north) | About 265 km (165 miles) | 6 to 6.5 hours |
| Oloololo (Mara Triangle) | 253 to 275 km (157 to 170 miles) | 6 to 6.5 hours |
Distances differ by up to about 20 km between routing software and operator guides, and the times leave out long stops. A safe rule is 5 to 6 hours to Sekenani and the other eastern gates, and 6 to 7 hours to the Mara Triangle and Musiara.
Road condition matters as much as distance. The Narok to Sekenani road was rebuilt in tarmac and reported complete in 2021, but in July 2026 residents blocked it to protest its state and travelers were stranded for more than six hours. Floods closed the Mai Mahiu to Narok highway in March and April 2026. Treat the roads as paved but in poor repair in places, add about an hour in the rainy months of April to May and November, and ask your operator for current conditions. One operator guide says there is no entry to the reserve after 6:30 pm, so a late start can leave you missing the gate.
Two days: why it is too short
On day one you leave Nairobi early, drive 5 to 6 hours and, at best, make an afternoon game drive. On day two you get one morning drive before the 5 to 7-hour journey back. That is 10 to 12 hours in a vehicle for two game drives, and a delay of an hour or two on the road removes one of them.
A two-day trip only makes sense when time is the hard limit. Entice lists a 2 Days 1 Night Maasai Mara Kenya Safari by Road with no published price, so ask for a tailor-made quote.
Three days: the shortest stay that works by road
Three days gives you one full day in the Mara plus a part day at each end. That is up to four game drives: the afternoon of day one, two on day two and the morning of day three. It is a first look at the reserve, with a long drive attached.
Entice’s 3-Day Maasai Mara Roar & Roam Safari starts from USD 1,420 per person, and a Maasai village visit on this trip is USD 30, paid on the day. Our 3-day Masai Mara safari from Nairobi guide shows how a three-day stay is laid out.
Four to five days: a comfortable first safari
Four days gives you two full days and five gives you three. That is enough to spend a whole day in one part of the reserve without watching the clock, and to add an activity without giving up a game drive. A hot-air balloon flight is an optional extra at USD 550 per person. Fees last verified: October 2026.
Our 4-day Masai Mara safari guide sets out three ways to spend four days, and the 5-day Masai Mara safari guide covers the itinerary and price. Entice’s 5 days Masai Mara Migration Safari starts from USD 2,750 per person.
Six to seven days: the migration stay
The Serengeti-Mara wildebeest herd is one population that circulates between the southern Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. The herds are usually in the Mara from about July to October, with river-crossing action busiest from late July to September. Timing follows the rain and the grass: arrivals can start in mid-June after plentiful rain in Kenya, and in 2021 Kenyan scientists said the migration was delayed significantly by dry conditions.
A river crossing cannot be scheduled. Some crossings run for hours and the pattern is only somewhat predictable, so five full days give you several mornings at the river instead of one. Entice’s 7 Days Maasai Mara Migration Safari starts from USD 4,500 per person. Our guide to the best time to visit the Masai Mara, month by month goes into the timing.
Treat herd-size headlines with caution: a March 2023 aerial census counted about 1.37 million wildebeest, while a 2025 satellite study counted about 0.5 million in August 2023.
Two trips to start from
3-Day Maasai Mara Roar & Roam Safari: for a long weekend with one full day in the reserve. From USD 1,420 per person.
5 days Masai Mara Migration Safari: three full days, for first-time safari travelers who want a less rushed stay. From USD 2,750 per person.
Flying in: the maths
A scheduled flight from Wilson Airport takes 45 to 60 minutes, longer if the plane makes stops. The rest of the day shrinks the saving.
| By road | By air | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to the Mara | 5 to 6 hours to the eastern gates; 6 to 7 to the Triangle and Musiara | 45 to 60 minutes in the air |
| Before you leave | Early start from Nairobi | Reach Wilson Airport, about 8 km from central Nairobi (Safarilink advises at least an hour in the rush), and check in 60 to 90 minutes before departure |
| At the other end | Drive from the gate to camp | Airstrip to camp; the wrong airstrip can mean about two hours on unpaved roads |
As a rough estimate rather than a published figure, the Wilson transfer, check-in, flight and airstrip transfer add up to about 3 to 3.5 hours, against 5 to 7 on the road. That saves about two to three hours each way, or roughly one extra game drive at each end.
Flying therefore matters most on short stays: a three-day fly-in trip comes closer to a four-day road trip. Flights add a cost per person, so ask for them to be priced into your quote. Ask your camp which airstrip your flight uses: the Mara has about a dozen, and each airline serves 8 or 9 of them.
How the season changes the answer
| When | Herds in the Mara? | What to allow |
|---|---|---|
| January to March | No, calving is on the southern Serengeti plains in Tanzania | 3 to 5 days |
| April to June | Not yet, though early arrivals are possible from mid-June in a wet year | 3 to 5 days; add about an hour in the April to May rains |
| July to October | Usually yes, busiest from late July to September | 5 to 7 days if the river is your priority |
| November to December | Heading south from early November | 3 to 5 days; add about an hour for mud in November |
Dates move with the rains. Outside the herd months the Mara’s resident wildlife is still there.
Small details that change the plan
- Leave a buffer at the end. The drive back can take 5 to 7 hours, so avoid an international flight the same evening.
- Pack soft bags for a fly-in. Scheduled Mara flights allow 15 kg including hand luggage, spare batteries go in hand luggage, and drones are generally prohibited in parks and reserves without permits.

Frequently asked questions
Is two days enough for the Masai Mara?
Only as a taster. Driving takes 10 to 12 hours of a two-day trip and leaves two game drives at most. Flying in makes the same two days far more usable, but three days is the better starting point.
Is three days enough for the Masai Mara?
Yes, if you accept one full day plus two part days. You will see the reserve and some of its wildlife, but you have little room for a bad-weather morning or a second visit to a sighting.
How many days do I need for the Great Migration?
Plan five to seven days between July and October. The herds are usually in the Mara in those months, but arrival depends on rain and crossings cannot be timed, so more days means more mornings at the river.
How long is the drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara?
Allow 5 to 6 hours to Sekenani and the other eastern gates and 6 to 7 hours to the Mara Triangle and Musiara. The distance is about 225 to 275 km (140 to 170 miles) depending on the gate, and rain, roadworks and traffic at Mai Mahiu add time.
Should I fly or drive to the Masai Mara?
Fly if you have two to four days and want more time on game drives. Drive if you have five days or more, want to see the Rift Valley on the way, or want to keep costs down. A flight takes 45 to 60 minutes and costs extra per person.
