Getting from Nairobi to Laikipia takes about 3 to 3.5 hours by road to Nanyuki, the gateway town roughly 190 km (120 miles) north of the capital, or about 45 to 75 minutes by light aircraft from Wilson Airport. Ol Pejeta quotes about 220 km and 4 to 4.5 hours for the drive to the conservancy, and Lewa describes itself as four hours from Nairobi. This guide sets out both routes, the distances to each conservancy, luggage limits and the stops worth making, and it sits alongside our guide to the Laikipia conservancies.
Which option makes sense depends on where you are staying. Ol Pejeta lies just outside Nanyuki, so the road works well. Loisaba and the northern lodges sit much further on, and a flight saves the longest stretch. If you are still getting your bearings, where Laikipia sits on the map explains how the plateau fits together.

Nairobi to Laikipia at a glance
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Road distance, Nairobi to Nanyuki | About 190 km (120 miles) |
| Drive time to Nanyuki | 3 to 3.5 hours, including Nairobi traffic |
| Drive to Ol Pejeta | About 220 km, 4 to 4.5 hours (Ol Pejeta’s own figure) |
| Drive to Lewa | About 240 km, around 4 hours |
| Flight from Nairobi | About 45 to 75 minutes to Nanyuki, 45 minutes to 1 hour to Lewa Downs, about 1 hour to Loisaba |
| Departure airport | Wilson Airport, not Jomo Kenyatta International |
| Luggage on the small planes | 15 kg per person, in soft bags |
These figures come from operator pages and route planners checked in October 2026. They are given as “about” because traffic, stops and the position of your lodge change the real time. If you are choosing a trip rather than a transfer, the 8 Days Ol Pejeta Masai Mara Amboseli Luxury Kenya Safari combines Ol Pejeta with the Masai Mara and Amboseli.
The road from Nairobi to Nanyuki
You leave Nairobi on the Thika Superhighway, an eight-lane stretch of about 50 km of the A2 highway that opened in November 2012. The A2 then runs through Thika, Makuyu, Karatina, Nyeri and Naro Moru to Nanyuki, and carries on north to Isiolo.
A route planner puts the drive at 189 km and 2 hours 52 minutes for a private car with no stops. Planner times do not allow for Nairobi traffic, so plan on 3 to 3.5 hours, and more if you stop. Leaving early gives you slack for the city.
Road distances and drive times
| Destination | From Nairobi | From Nanyuki |
|---|---|---|
| Nanyuki | About 190 km, 3 to 3.5 hours | Not applicable |
| Naro Moru | On the way to Nanyuki | About 23 km, 20 minutes |
| Ol Pejeta Conservancy | About 220 km, 4 to 4.5 hours | About 10 km, 4 to 22 minutes depending on property and gate |
| Lewa Wildlife Conservancy | About 240 km, around 4 hours | About 51 km, about 1 hour 25 minutes |
| Loisaba | About 380 km, 6 to 8 hours | About 78 to 80 km, 1.5 to 3 hours |
| Sosian | Not given | About 2 hours |
| Isiolo | About 260 km, about 4 hours | 79 km, about 1 hour 10 minutes |
| Nyahururu | About 180 km, about 2 hours 40 minutes | About 94 km, about 2 hours 20 minutes |
A few notes on these numbers. Ol Pejeta’s figure includes the run beyond Nanyuki to the lodging areas, while route planners give about 192 km and 3 hours to the centre of the conservancy, so use Ol Pejeta’s wording when you plan. Lewa’s own directions run through Nanyuki and Timau, with the turn about 15 km after Timau on the Isiolo road and the main entrance about 3 km further. For Loisaba the sources disagree: one travel review described nearly 3 hours on an older, rough road, and Loisaba allows only 4×4 vehicles in green or brown colours inside. Loisaba also gives routes from Nyahururu as well as Nanyuki.
Flying from Wilson Airport to Laikipia
Scheduled safari flights leave from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, not Jomo Kenyatta. Safarilink and Air Kenya are the two airlines that Lewa, Loisaba and Elewana name for the route, each with daily direct flights from Wilson. Route planners list other small operators too, so check current options when you book.
| Airstrip | Serves | Flight from Wilson |
|---|---|---|
| Nanyuki | The main gateway to Laikipia | About 45 to 75 minutes |
| Kamok | Ol Pejeta | Ask the airline when booking |
| Lewa Downs | Lewa and Borana | About 45 minutes to 1 hour, then 15 to 40 minutes to camp |
| Loisaba | Loisaba, Mugie, Sosian and Laikipia Wilderness | About 1 hour, then about 15 minutes to Loisaba’s camps |
The Nanyuki airstrip sits about 6.5 km south of town at 1,900 m, with one asphalt runway of 1,200 m for light aircraft. Timetables change by season, so confirm departure times with the airline or your planner. Scheduled flights are often multi-stop: Air Kenya notes that arrival and departure times at Lewa Downs and Loisaba can vary by up to 45 minutes depending on the routing across several airstrips. Do not plan a tight connection to an international flight on the same day.
One estimate puts one-way fares at USD 150 to 400 per person, while booking aggregators show a far wider spread. Treat any figure as a guide and ask for a quote for your dates. A trip such as the 7 Day Untamed Skies Safari: Flying The Hidden North of Kenya is built around flying in northern Kenya.
Luggage limits on the small planes
- Both Safarilink and Air Kenya allow 15 kg per person in soft-sided bags on safari routes.
- Safarilink counts hand baggage inside the 15 kg and may move rigid suitcases to a later flight.
- Air Kenya counts personal items of up to 5 kg inside the 15 kg and recommends a checked bag of about 60 x 45 x 33 cm.
- Excess: Air Kenya sells an extra freight seat for up to 75 kg of excess at USD 5 per kg, and Safarilink sells excess-baggage bundles up to 48 hours ahead. Check the current price when you book.
- Both airlines offer free storage for luggage you do not need on the trip; Safarilink keeps it at its Wilson Airport office.

From Laikipia to Samburu, the Mara and Lake Nakuru
| From Nanyuki to | By road | By air |
|---|---|---|
| Samburu National Reserve | 118 km, about 2 hours 20 minutes, via Isiolo | About 30 to 40 minutes |
| Masai Mara | 374 km, about 7 hours 40 minutes | About 1 hour 15 minutes on AirKenya Express |
Samburu National Reserve covers 165 square km along the Ewaso Ng’iro. From Wilson, AirKenya Express flies direct in about an hour, while other operators route via Nanyuki, about 2 hours 55 minutes in total. The 10-Day Kenya Safari: Samburu to the Maasai Mara links the north with the Mara in one itinerary.
For the Mara, flying is the practical choice: 374 km of road takes most of a day. Route planners list the Nanyuki flight once daily, and Air Kenya’s 2025 timetable shows a Lewa Downs to Masai Mara hop. Charters can link Laikipia airstrips with the Mara directly, and scheduled links change by season. Our guide to the Masai Mara fly-in safari covers airstrips, airlines and luggage, and Masai Mara safari from Nairobi: drive or fly compares the Nairobi options.
Lake Nakuru National Park, a 188 square km fenced park set up as a rhino sanctuary, is 161 km and about 3 hours 40 minutes by road from Nanyuki.

Road or flight: which suits you
| Road | Flight | |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi to Nanyuki | 3 to 3.5 hours | About 45 to 75 minutes in the air, plus check-in and transfers |
| Luggage | Limited by vehicle space | 15 kg per person, soft bags |
| Best for | Nanyuki and Ol Pejeta | Lewa, Loisaba and the north |
| Cost | Depends on vehicle and driver | One estimate: USD 150 to 400 one way per person |
| On the way | Equator and Mount Kenya views | No stops |
One option is to drive one way for the views and fly the other, or to drive to Ol Pejeta and fly on to the Mara from Nanyuki.
Stops on the way: the equator and Mount Kenya
Naro Moru, about 20 minutes before Nanyuki, is where the Naro Moru route up Mount Kenya starts. The equator runs through the southern part of Nanyuki, and a government sign beside the A2 road is where visitors photograph themselves.
Nanyuki lies north-west of Mount Kenya and is a base for climbers. Batian, the highest peak, stands at 5,199 m, and Point Lenana at 4,985 m is the highest peak that can be reached without technical climbing. The Sirimon route starts about 15 km east of Nanyuki. National park fees apply on the mountain, so check the current Kenya Wildlife Service rates. Some lodges are placed to look at it: Ol Pejeta’s partner page lists Kicheche Laikipia Camp, with a waterhole and Mount Kenya behind it, and Sweetwaters Serena Camp, with mountain views. Loisaba Tented Camp sits on a ridge facing the mountain.
Practical tips before you go
- Arrive in daylight. Ol Pejeta lists its all-day game drive as 7:00am to 7:00pm and says no driving in the conservancy is allowed after 7pm.
- Budget for entry fees. Ol Pejeta lists daily entry for non-resident adults at USD 110 and children at USD 55. Check whether your lodge rate includes them. Fees last verified: October 2026.
- Pack layers. Nanyuki has average daily highs of 22 to 26 C and lows of 7 to 11 C, with a distinct dry season in January and February.
- Confirm the airstrip. Nanyuki, Kamok, Lewa Downs and Loisaba serve different camps, so check which one yours uses.
