Where Is Laikipia? The Laikipia Plateau Explained

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Nanyuki, Kenya

Laikipia is a county and high plateau in central Kenya, north of Mount Kenya and east of the Great Rift Valley, with the equator running through its main town, Nanyuki. Laikipia County covers about 9,000 km² at mostly 1,600 to 2,000 m above sea level, and Nanyuki is about 190 km from Nairobi, a drive of 3 to 3.5 hours. Visitors come for the Laikipia conservancies, private and community land where wildlife lives, because the county has no national park.

This guide explains where Laikipia sits, how big and how high it is, how far it is from Nairobi, the Masai Mara, Samburu and Mount Kenya, and why ranches here became wildlife country. Figures are rounded and come from county profiles, operator pages and route planners, so treat every distance as “about”.

Laikipia is easy to combine with other regions. Our 8 Days Ol Pejeta Masai Mara Amboseli Luxury Kenya Safari puts Ol Pejeta, a Laikipia conservancy, beside two of Kenya’s best-known parks.

Where is Laikipia on the map?

Laikipia County sits in central Kenya, in the northern part of the Mount Kenya region. Samburu lies to the north, Isiolo to the north-east, Meru to the east, Nyeri to the south-east, Nyandarua to the south, Nakuru to the south-west and Baringo to the west. Mount Kenya forms part of the south-eastern border, and the Great Rift Valley borders the plateau on the west, where the land drops away in an escarpment.

The equator, Nanyuki and Mount Kenya

The equator runs through Nanyuki, the main town on the road north from Nairobi. The A2 highway carries on from Nanyuki to Isiolo and the road to Samburu. Mount Kenya is the landmark most visitors use to place Laikipia. Its highest peak, Batian, is 5,199 m (17,057 ft), and the mountain lies about 150 km north-north-east of Nairobi and about 16.5 km south of the equator. UNESCO listed the park and surrounding forest as a World Heritage site in 1997.

The Laikipia Plateau: height, land and rivers

The Laikipia Plateau is the high ground at the heart of the county. Most of it sits at 1,600 to 2,000 m, rising in the south-east near the Aberdare foothills, while the north-east is lower and hillier. One source puts the plateau between 1,700 and 2,550 m, so the exact range depends on where you measure. It formed 20 to 25 million years ago from volcanic rock. Where the Engare Ondare river leaves the county, the land falls to about 1,000 m, which shows how steeply the country drops toward the Rift Valley floor.

The Ewaso Ng’iro is Laikipia’s largest river, and most rivers in the county flow north to join it. The Nanyuki and Engare Ondare rivers rise on Mount Kenya, while the Ewaso Narok and Ewaso Nyiro rise in the Aberdares. The Ewaso Ng’iro runs about 700 km, flows through Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba national reserves and ends in the Lorian Swamp. Its Maasai name means “river of brown or muddy water”. Our 10-Day Kenya Safari: Samburu to the Maasai Mara is one way to follow that northern country on a single trip.

Towns you will hear about

  • Nanyuki lies in the south-east and is the best-known gateway, with a municipal population of 72,813 (2019).
  • Nyahururu lies in the south-west and is the other major urban centre.
  • Rumuruti is the county headquarters.

Most conservancies lie outside the towns, and you reach them by road or by flights into airstrips.

How far is Laikipia from Nairobi, the Mara, Samburu and Mount Kenya?

These are road distances unless stated. Most come from route planners, a few from operators, so traffic, roadworks and the position of your lodge will change the time.

Route Distance Time Note
Nairobi to Nanyuki About 190 km 3 to 3.5 hours Via Thika, Karatina, Nyeri and Naro Moru
Nairobi to Ol Pejeta About 220 km 4 to 4.5 hours Ol Pejeta’s own figures
Nairobi to Lewa About 240 km About 4 hours Lewa describes it as a four-hour drive
Nairobi to Mount Kenya About 150 km (north-north-east) Not given Direction and distance from the capital; one source gives about 193 km
Nanyuki to Ol Pejeta About 10 km 15 to 20 minutes Depends on which gate you use
Nanyuki to Lewa About 51 km 1.5 hours Via Timau on the Isiolo road
Nanyuki to Loisaba 78 to 80 km 1.5 to 3 hours Sources disagree; depends on the road and lodge
Nanyuki to Isiolo About 79 km About 1 hour 10 minutes On the A2
Nanyuki to Nyahururu About 94 km About 2 hours 20 minutes Route-planner estimate
Nanyuki to Samburu National Reserve About 118 km About 2 hours 20 minutes by road; 30 to 40 minutes by air Road runs north through Isiolo
Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve 300 to 350 km 5 to 6 hours Sources differ
Nanyuki to Masai Mara About 374 km About 7 hours 40 minutes by road; about 1 hour 15 minutes by air AirKenya route, listed as once daily

Conservancies are large, so the drive from the gate to a camp can add time. One lodge group quotes road transfers of 2 to 5 hours to its Lewa property and 2 to 6 hours to its Loisaba one, depending on where you start. The flight between Nanyuki and the Mara saves most of a day. See our guide to getting to Laikipia from Nairobi by road and air for the options, and our Masai Mara safari guide for the Mara’s own distance from Nairobi.

Climate and what to pack for the plateau

Altitude keeps Laikipia cooler than the lowlands, and the county profile gives a mean temperature of 16 to 26 °C. Early game drives are cold even when afternoons are warm, so pack layers: a fleece or light jacket, a hat, sunscreen and closed shoes. Add a rain jacket if you travel in the wet months.

  • March to May: the long rains.
  • October and November: the short rains.
  • June to August: areas near the Aberdares and Mount Kenya also get rain.

Why Laikipia became wildlife country

Laikipia has no national park or national reserve, yet a lead researcher on a 2018 study of 3,588 km² of private land said the county hosts about 10 percent of Kenya’s wildlife. The same researcher said almost 70 percent of the land is devoted to large-scale ranching or pastoralism. Wildlife shares this country with cattle and with Maasai, Samburu, Pokot and Turkana herders.

That is why conservation and tourism here depend so heavily on landowners rather than a park authority. Private and communal landowners founded the Laikipia Wildlife Forum in 1992, based near Nanyuki, to work together on wildlife, water, rangelands, land use and tourism. The member-led Laikipia Conservancies Association followed in 2019. It lists 24 member conservancies, 350,000 hectares of land and 512 scouts. Members include Borana, Il Ngwesi, Loisaba, Lolldaiga, Mugie, Ol Jogi, Ol Pejeta and Segera.

Using the county area figures above, 350,000 hectares (3,500 km²) is roughly a third to two-fifths of Laikipia County. That is our own arithmetic, not a published figure. Conservancies are privately or community owned, and rules differ between them. Loisaba, for example, states that only 4×4 vehicles in green or brown colours are allowed in. Your planner will tell you what applies at the camp you choose. Our complete guide to Laikipia conservancies covers the individual places in more detail.

Who Laikipia suits

Laikipia suits travellers who have a week or more and want a second region alongside the Masai Mara. Samburu National Reserve, 165 km² on the Ewaso Ng’iro at 800 to 1,230 m, sits lower and further north, so the two regions feel different. Our northern Kenya safari of 7 to 9 days shows how Samburu, Ol Pejeta and Laikipia fit together.
