Almost all budget camps in the Masai Mara sit just outside the reserve boundary, close to a gate such as Sekenani, Talek or Ololaimutiek. One budget-camp guide groups their nightly rates for two people into three bands: under USD 20, USD 30 to 70 and USD 90 to 130. On top of the camp, a non-resident adult pays a park fee of USD 100 a day from January to June and USD 200 a day from July to December.
That is why the cheapest camp is not always the cheapest trip. The fee is charged for every day you enter the reserve, and a camp far from its gate takes time out of each game-drive day. The camps below are listed as budget by safari directories, which is not a confirmed booking, so treat this as a shortlist to check.

Cheap accommodation in the Masai Mara: where it sits
A directory of Masai Mara accommodation says that almost all properties it classes as budget lie outside the main reserve boundary. The camps named by a budget-camp guide fall into clusters around three gates, plus two that are far from any gate.
| Area | Camp | Band (USD a night, two people) | What the guide says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sekenani | Semadep Mara Camp | 30 to 70 | Very close to Sekenani Gate |
| Sekenani | Mama Safi Guest House | 30 to 70 | Close to Sekenani Gate; a guest house, not a campsite |
| Sekenani | Maasai Village & Safari | 30 to 70 | Close to Sekenani; a homestay in a local Maasai’s house |
| Talek | Greenwood Safari Camp | 30 to 70 | 5 minutes from Talek Gate |
| Talek | Aruba Mara Camp & Safaris | 30 to 70 | Very close to Talek village; very large tents, described as ideal for families |
| Talek | Crocodile Camp | 30 to 70 | Next to Talek village |
| Ololaimutiek | Enchoro Wildlife Camp | 30 to 70 | Next to Ololaimutiek Gate, near a lake |
| Ololaimutiek | Fisi Camp | 90 to 130 | About 5 minutes’ walk from the park gate |
| Far from the gates | Maji Moto Eco Camp | 90 to 130 | Needs an early start; described as a great place for families and couples |
| Near Narok | Osim Country Lodge | Under 20 | 17 km after Narok, about 70 km from the main gates, roughly 2 hours by road |
Three more names appear in budget listings: Jambo Mara Safari Lodge (band USD 90 to 130), Julia’s Camp and Ol Moran Camp. The directories give no reliable location for them, so ask where they are.
Cheapest is not always closest
Osim Country Lodge sits in the lowest band, but the drive to the main gates is about 2 hours. Fisi Camp is a short walk from its gate and sits in the top band. Compare the distance to the gate as carefully as the nightly rate.
What you get, and what you give up
A budget label tells you a price band and a position, and little else. The listings put a guest house, a homestay and tented camps under the same heading, so facilities differ a lot from camp to camp.
What you gain
- The lowest nightly rates in the Mara, so the same money can cover more nights or a second game-drive day.
- No extra bed levy at camps outside the reserve and outside the conservancies, according to one directory.
What you give up
- Time. You travel to the gate before each game drive and back again at night.
- Walking safaris. They are not permitted in the reserve and are offered in conservancies, so guests who want bush walks should choose a conservancy camp.
- A conservancy address. In the directories we checked, the camps named inside conservancies are filed as luxury or have no tier stated, and none sit in the budget tier.
How sitting outside the gate changes game drives and fees
Game-drive time
A park ticket runs for 12 hours, from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, whatever time you enter. It does not carry over to the next day. If your camp is 5 minutes from the gate, you are inside soon after you set out. If it is far away, the fee stays the same while the useful hours shrink. For anyone with only two or three days, that matters more than a few dollars a night.
Park fees
A fee is charged for each day you are in the reserve, and guests who sleep outside the reserve pay a daily entry fee like everyone else. These are the non-resident rates:
| Visitor | 1 January to 30 June | 1 July to 31 December |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | USD 100 per day | USD 200 per day |
| Child, 9 to 17 years | USD 50 per day | USD 50 per day |
| Younger children | Free | Free |
Sources differ on whether a child of exactly 8 is free, so confirm that age with us. Kenyan and East African residents pay lower rates in shillings, and the figures differ between sources, so we confirm the exact rate when we quote. Fees last verified: October 2026.
An example: two adults who enter the reserve on two days pay 2 x 2 x USD 100 = USD 400 in the first half of the year and 2 x 2 x USD 200 = USD 800 in the second.
Departure morning
If you leave by road on your last morning, one report says guests must exit by 10 am or pay another entry fee, while a camp notice says guests leaving after 11 am pay an extra full-day fee. Plan to be out by 10 am. The same notice says a balloon safari in the Mara Triangle on departure morning also needs a full-day park fee. Our optional balloon ride costs USD 550 per person, so ask about the day fee before you add it.
Two short ways to see the Mara
3-Day Maasai Mara Roar & Roam Safari: for travellers with a long weekend who want a full Mara safari without a long itinerary. From USD 1,420 per person; prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice.
2 Days 1 Night Maasai Mara Kenya Safari by Road: for travellers who can spare only one night and are happy to go by road. It has no published price, so ask for a tailor-made quote.
What to check before you book a budget camp
- Minutes to the gate by vehicle. Ask which gate you will use.
- What the price includes. Check whether park fees, vehicle and guide are in the quote.
- Private or shared game drives. Ask whether the vehicle is shared.
- The room itself. Tent, room or homestay; private or shared bathroom; hot water; charging; meals.
- Current status. A directory listing does not prove a camp is open on your dates.
- Children. Age limits vary by camp, so ask us.
- Extras. On our 3-day trip, a Maasai village visit is USD 30 paid on the day, and the optional balloon is USD 550 per person.
If the budget stretches a little
The directories also list mid-range camps near the same gates. Near Sekenani Gate they name Tayari Luxury Camp, AA Lodge Mara, Sekenani Camp and Oseki Masai Mara Camp. Near Talek Gate they name Zebra Plains Camp, Mara Siligi Camp and Mara Napa Camp. Our sources give no nightly rates for these, so ask for a quote. Frequently asked questions
Are there budget camps inside the Masai Mara reserve?
Almost none. A directory says almost all budget properties lie outside the main reserve boundary. The Mara Conservancy says only two accommodations sit inside the Mara Triangle, Mara Serena Safari Lodge and Little Governors’ Camp, and neither is listed as budget.
What do Masai Mara budget lodges cost per night?
One budget-camp guide gives bands of under USD 20, USD 30 to 70 and USD 90 to 130 per night for two people. They are indicative only, from a single source, and they exclude park fees. Confirm the current rate with the camp or ask us for an itemised quote.
Do I pay park fees if my camp is outside the gate?
Yes. A fee is charged for each day you are in the reserve, whether you sleep inside or outside it. A non-resident adult pays USD 100 a day from January to June and USD 200 a day from July to December.
Which gate should I pick, Sekenani, Talek or Ololaimutiek?
The distance from camp to gate matters more than the gate’s name. Greenwood Safari Camp is 5 minutes from Talek Gate, and Fisi Camp is about a 5-minute walk from the park gate at Ololaimutiek. Tell us how many days you have and we will match a camp to your plan.
Are budget camps suitable for families?
Some are. Aruba Mara Camp & Safaris is described as ideal for families because of its very large tents, and Maji Moto Eco Camp as a great place for families and couples. Age limits vary by camp, so ask us before you book.
Is a two-day trip enough for the Mara?
It is short. Road travel takes up part of each end of the trip, so you get fewer game-drive hours. The 2 Days 1 Night Maasai Mara Kenya Safari by Road suits travellers short of time, and we quote it to order. A third day adds game-drive time and one more park fee.
When is the cheapest time to go?
The park fee halves from January to June, when a non-resident adult pays USD 100 a day instead of USD 200. Camp rates also change with the season, so ask us to price your dates.
