Multigenerational Family Safari in Kenya: Planning for All Ages

A multigenerational family safari in Kenya works when you plan around the traveler who tires first and the traveler who gets restless first. In practice that means a private vehicle you control, at least two or three nights in each camp, short flights instead of long road days, and a mix of shared moments and optional extras.

This guide is for families in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Europe who are booking for grandparents, parents and children together. It covers pace, places and timing, vehicles and rooms, age limits, and the paperwork a bigger group has to get right.

Plan around the slowest day, not the fittest traveler

Before you look at parks or camps, write down each person’s age, how far they can comfortably walk, how long they can sit in a vehicle, and any medication, diet or sleep needs. Then plan the grandparents’ comfort first, and fill in activities for the children around it.

Every Entice safari is private, with your own 4×4 and guide, so the schedule is yours. You can skip the dawn drive, stop for an hour at a waterhole, or head back to camp when a six-year-old has had enough. A shared group vehicle cannot offer that.

  • Pick two or three shared moments. A lion sighting, a sundowner, a rhino encounter. Everything else can be optional.
  • Build in a free afternoon at every camp. Pools and verandas are part of the vacation, not a waste of it.
  • Keep drives short for young children. Two good hours beat five tired ones.

If the children are young and you are also thinking about Tanzania, our family safari guide for Kenya and Tanzania covers costs, safety and lodge types in more detail.

Where to go, and when

Place Why it suits mixed ages Plan around
Maasai Mara Open plains, big cats and the migration herds, so sightings come quickly Peak-season crowds, and a bumpy road if you drive from Nairobi
Ol Pejeta Rhinos, including northern white rhinos, and a chimpanzee sanctuary Activity age limits, so check them before you book
Samburu Northern species such as reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra, in a riverside setting Semi-arid terrain, and a long transfer if you go by road
Amboseli Elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro behind them, on flat open ground Dust, and Kilimanjaro views on clear days only
Diani Beach A restful finish after the safari days Malaria precautions still apply at the coast

Governors’ Camp says the migration herds begin to arrive in the Maasai Mara in July, with river crossings building by August and the season running to October. It also says the timing depends on conditions and cannot be promised. Those months line up with northern-hemisphere summer vacations, so expect the Mara to be at its most popular.

If school calendars allow, a shoulder month is calmer. On our 6-day fly-in trip, for example, the January to March rate is lower than July to October. The Mara still has resident lions, elephants and cheetahs outside the migration window.

Pace: fewer bases, shorter transfers, three trips to compare

Every change of camp costs a morning of packing, a transfer and an afternoon of recovery. For a mixed-age group, two or three nights in each base is a sensible minimum. Our 10-day senior-friendly trip has nine nights: one in Nairobi, then two at Ol Pejeta, three in Samburu and three in the Maasai Mara, with four flights included.

Flying saves hours. Governors’ Aviation lists the Wilson Airport to Mara flight at around 45 minutes, while one Mara operator puts the road at five to six hours, bumpy and dusty in places. The catch is luggage. Safarilink, a scheduled light-aircraft operator, allows 15 kg per person including hand luggage, in soft bags, and says infants without a seat get no allowance. Allowances differ by airline and route, so check yours before you pack, and ask your Nairobi hotel to hold larger cases.

Trip Route Suits From
6-Day Fly-In Big Five Safari Amboseli and the Mara, linked by scheduled flights Families with a short window and active grandparents USD 4,043 per person, two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates
10-Day Senior-Friendly Luxury Kenya Safari Ol Pejeta, Samburu and the Mara, four flights included Groups that want an unhurried pace USD 7,000 per person
12-Day Luxury Senior Safari and Beach Serenity Samburu and the Mara, then a flight to Diani Beach Groups that want beach days to finish USD 5,150 per person

We built the two senior trips for older travelers. For a family group we keep their rhythm of long stays and short flights, then adjust the camps, rooms and activities to the children’s ages. Prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice, and children’s rates vary by camp and age.

Vehicles, rooms and splitting up for the day

Larger families often travel in two vehicles so that everyone has a window seat. Tell us your group size and the quote will show how many vehicles it needs. Two vehicles also make it possible to split up: grandparents can take a late-morning drive while teenagers go out at dawn. A second vehicle and guide add to the cost, so ask for it as an option.

For rooms, ask about family rooms or neighboring tents, and tell us how far each person can walk. Distance from room to dining area, steps and path surfaces matter more to a grandparent than a view does. Camps differ a lot on room layouts, so ask for these details camp by camp before you commit.

Meal times matter too. Ask whether the camp will serve breakfast early for a dawn drive and keep an easy lunch for those who stay behind.

Age limits, entry rules and luggage

Kenya has no single minimum age for a safari. Camps and activity operators set their own, and they differ:

  • Ol Pejeta’s site pitches the conservancy to children above five, says some activities have age restrictions for safety, and tells families to check with its reservations team.
  • Safari.com’s listing for Governors’ Camp shows no minimum age for stays, game drives or walking safaris.
  • Africa Geographic’s age guide puts a typical minimum for walking safaris at 12, rising to 16 at some Big Five lodges.
  • Balloon operators set their own limits. Governors’ Balloon Safaris, for example, requires children to be at least eight and taller than 1.2 meters. Our optional Maasai Mara hot-air balloon add-on is USD 550 per person, and the operator’s age rule applies to it, so ask which one is used on your dates.

Give us the children’s ages and we will check each camp’s rules for those ages before we quote.

Entry paperwork multiplies with group size. Kenya’s embassy in Washington says all visitors, including infants and children, need an approved eTA before they travel, and the official portal says an application is needed for each individual. The portal lists the standard fee as starting at USD 30, with processing generally completed within three business days. The UK government’s advice for British travelers is to apply at least two weeks ahead, as the local authorities recommend, and to hold a passport valid for six months after arrival with two blank pages. Check your own government’s advice for your passport. The UK advice also says that from 5 October 2026 eTA applicants must buy travel health insurance as part of the application. These rules have been changing, so read the current requirements on etakenya.go.ke before you pay.

For a family of eight, that is eight applications. Start early, and ask one adult to handle them all.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a multigenerational safari in Kenya cost?

It depends on the season, group size and lodge choice. Our 6-Day Fly-In Big Five Safari starts from USD 4,043 per person, two sharing, on January to March 2027 rates. Our 10-day senior-friendly trip starts from USD 7,000 per person and our 12-day trip from USD 5,150 per person. Children’s rates vary by camp and age, so tell us who is traveling and we will price it line by line.

What is the minimum age for a safari in Kenya?

There is no national rule, so it depends on the camp and the activity. Africa Geographic notes that most lodges require a private vehicle for children under five, which every Entice trip already provides. Walks and balloon flights carry higher limits, as listed above.

How many days do we need?

Ten days gives three bases of two to three nights each, which suits most mixed groups. Six days works if you fly between two bases, such as Amboseli and the Mara. With fewer days than that, a large share of the trip goes on transfers.

Can a grandparent with limited mobility join a safari?

Often, because the game viewing is done from a vehicle. The details decide it: step height into the vehicle, the walk from room to dining area, and the length of road transfers. Our guide to African safaris for seniors goes through what to check. Tell us what each person can manage and we will plan around it.

Do children and grandparents need malaria tablets and a yellow fever shot?

Ask a doctor or travel clinic well before you go, because the right choice depends on age, health and other medicines. As of its August 2026 review, the CDC lists malaria risk in all areas of Kenya below 2,500 meters, including game parks, and recommends prescription preventive medicine. It recommends yellow fever vaccine for most travelers aged nine months and older, with exceptions such as Nairobi and parts of the coast. Pack any prescriptions in your hand luggage.
