A budget Masai Mara safari works when you travel by road, sleep in a camp outside the gates, visit while the park fee is at its lower rate and share the costs with a travel partner. The Mara lies roughly 225 to 275 km from Nairobi depending on the gate, and the line you can move most is the park fee: USD 100 per adult per day from January to June, USD 200 from July to December. Below: where the money goes, what each saving costs you, and where to stop cutting. For the full picture of the reserve, start with our complete Masai Mara safari guide.
As a reference point, our 3-Day Maasai Mara Roar & Roam Safari starts from USD 1,420 per person, based on midrange lodging in low season with two people sharing. Prices depend on season, group size and lodge choice, so treat every figure here as a planning guide, not a quote.

Where the money goes on a Masai Mara safari
Five things set the price, and you control most of them.
- Park fees. They are charged per person per day in the reserve, and the rate changes on 1 July. You cannot negotiate them, but you can choose your dates.
- Where you sleep. The camp tier moves the total more than any other choice. Almost all budget properties sit outside the main reserve boundary, according to one safari directory.
- How you get there. A road transfer costs hours of your day. A scheduled flight costs money instead.
- How many days. The journey from Nairobi is a fixed cost, so a very short trip spends a large share of the budget on getting there.
- Extras. The optional hot-air balloon flight is USD 550 per person, and the Maasai village visit on our 3-day trip is USD 30, paid on the day.
Park fees: the cost you can time
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is run by Narok County Government, and non-resident visitors pay by the day. Business Daily reported the current two-rate system in May 2026.
| Visitor | 1 January to 30 June | 1 July to 31 December |
|---|---|---|
| Non-resident adult | USD 100 per day | USD 200 per day |
| Non-resident child, 9 to 17 | USD 50 per day | USD 50 per day |
| Younger children | Free | Free |
| Foreign national from East Africa, adult | KSh 4,500 per day | KSh 4,500 per day |
| Kenyan citizen from outside Narok County, adult | KSh 3,000 per day | KSh 3,000 per day |
Fees last verified: October 2026.
Three details change the arithmetic. The ticket is valid for 12 hours, from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm whatever time you enter, and it does not carry over to the next day. Staying outside the reserve does not avoid the fee, because guests lodged outside still pay for each day they enter. And sources differ on whether eight-year-olds are free, so confirm the cut-off when you book.
Here is what timing is worth. On an itinerary with two days in the reserve, one adult pays USD 200 in fees from January to June and USD 400 from July to December. The same trip costs USD 200 more per adult in the second half of the year.
The Mara Triangle in the west sells its own 12-hour ticket through the Mara Conservancy. Its published notice used the same USD 100 and USD 200 figures, but we could not read its current fee table, so confirm the amount with the Conservancy.
Six ways to save on a Masai Mara safari
1. Travel while the fee is at its lower rate
From 1 January to 30 June the adult fee is half the July to December rate. The trade-off is weather: the lower-fee months include rainy spells when roads are slower and drives can be muddier. Camp rates follow their own seasons, so ask for a quote on your exact dates. Our guide to low season in the Masai Mara sets out the pros and cons.
2. Sleep outside the gates
You still pay the daily reserve fee, but the nightly rate is lower. One Mara guide notes that camps outside both the reserve and the conservancies carry no extra bed levy. A budget-camp guide groups camps into three bands per night for two people: under USD 20, USD 30 to 70 and USD 90 to 130. Treat these as indicative, since they come from a single blog and not from the camps. Greenwood Safari Camp, about five minutes from Talek Gate, and Semadep Mara Camp, very close to Sekenani Gate, both sit in the middle band. A step up, mid-range camps near Sekenani Gate include AA Lodge Mara and Sekenani Camp.
A directory listing shows that a camp exists, not that it is open on your dates, so confirm that before you book. Our piece on budget camps in the Masai Mara that are actually good goes through the options.
3. Go by road rather than by air
A scheduled flight from Wilson Airport takes about 45 to 60 minutes. The road takes much longer, but it removes a ticket from the bill. Distances below are from Nairobi City Hall by OpenStreetMap routing; times are operator ranges, which include the stops a map leaves out.
| Gate | Road distance from Nairobi | Typical drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Sekenani (east) | About 227 km (141 miles) | 5 to 6 hours |
| Talek (centre-east) | About 246 km (153 miles) | 5 to 6 hours |
| Oloolaimutia (south-east) | About 242 km (150 miles) | About 6 hours |
| Oloololo (Mara Triangle, west) | About 253 km (157 miles) | 6 to 7 hours |
Allow longer in rain or after a road incident. The 86 km Narok to Sekenani road was rebuilt to bitumen and reported complete in 2021, but residents blocked it in July 2026 to protest its condition, and travellers were stranded for more than six hours. It is best seen as paved but in poor repair in places, so ask for current conditions before you leave.
4. Choose three days rather than two
The drive from Nairobi is the same whether you stay one night or two. Adding a night spreads that cost and gives you a full day in the reserve instead of two partial ones. Our 2 Days 1 Night Maasai Mara Kenya Safari by Road suits a short break and has no published price, so ask for a tailor-made quote. For more time and a trip planned around the migration, our 5 days Masai Mara Migration Safari starts from USD 2,750 per person.
5. Share the cost
Our from-prices assume two people sharing a room. A vehicle and driver-guide cost the same for two riders or five, so a larger private group splits that cost further. Solo travellers should ask what a single supplement would be for their dates. A child pays half the adult fee in the lower season and a quarter of it in the higher.
6. Plan the departure morning and the extras
If you leave by road on your last morning, one source says you must exit by 10 am and another says 11 am, or you may pay an additional full-day fee. A balloon flight on departure morning can also need a full-day fee, according to one camp notice, so book it for a morning when you are staying on. At USD 550 per person it is likely the largest single add-on, and it is optional.
Check what a low price includes
A low quote can leave out costs that appear later. Ask these questions before you compare two prices:
- Are park fees included, and for how many days?
- Is the vehicle a private 4×4 with a pop-up roof?
- Does the price include a driver-guide, meals and drinking water?
- Are both road transfers from Nairobi included?
- Is there a single supplement or a departure-day fee?
Our quotes are itemised, so park fees, lodging and transport show as separate lines you can compare.
Two ways to start a budget Mara trip
3-Day Maasai Mara Roar & Roam Safari suits first-time visitors who want two game-drive days. From USD 1,420 per person.
2 Days 1 Night Maasai Mara Kenya Safari by Road suits a short break by road. Ask for a tailor-made quote.
What you lose by going too cheap
Saving it in the wrong place costs you time with the animals. Spend where it adds time in the reserve, and save on things that do not.
- Distance from the gates. Osim Country Lodge, in the lowest price band, is about 70 km from the main gates, around 2 hours by road. Maji Moto Eco Camp is far from the gates and needs an early start. Every hour in transfers is an hour of a 12-hour ticket you paid for and did not use.
- Walking safaris. They are not permitted in the reserve and are offered in conservancies. Many conservancy camps are listed in the luxury tier, so a budget plan means skipping them.
- A very short trip. Two days by road leaves little time for game drives once the journey is done.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a budget Masai Mara safari cost?
It depends on your dates, camp and transport. Our 3-day trip is priced by accommodation level: budget, midrange and luxury. The USD 1,420 per person figure is the midrange level in low season with two sharing. Park fees alone are USD 100 or USD 200 per adult per day, so ask for an itemised quote. For wider context, read what a private Masai Mara trip really costs or what affordable Kenya safari packages buy.
What is the cheapest time to visit the Masai Mara?
The park fee is lowest from 1 January to 30 June, at USD 100 per adult per day. Camp rates have their own seasons, so compare quotes for your exact dates.
Do I pay park fees if I stay outside the reserve?
Yes. Guests lodged outside pay the daily entry fee for each day they enter, so a camp outside the gates saves on the room, not on the fee.
What do children pay?
Non-resident children aged 9 to 17 pay USD 50 per day in both seasons, and younger children are free. Confirm the age cut-off for eight-year-olds when you book. Age limits also vary by camp, so ask us.
Is it cheaper to fly or drive to the Masai Mara?
Driving avoids a flight ticket, but it takes about 5 to 6 hours to the eastern gates and 6 to 7 to the Mara Triangle side. A flight takes about 45 to 60 minutes. On a two or three-day trip, the time saved may justify the cost, so ask for both options.
