Masai Mara Conservancy Camps: Fewer Vehicles, Night Drives, Walks

The Mara River at Karen Blixen Camp, Mara North Conservancy, Kenya

Conservancy camps in the Masai Mara sit on Maasai-owned land beside the national reserve, and they allow what the reserve does not: night drives, off-road driving to reach wildlife and guided walks. They also limit how many beds are built, so fewer vehicles share each sighting. The Masai Mara is about 270 km (170 miles) from Nairobi, a 5 to 6-hour drive or a 45 to 60-minute flight.

This page covers the rules, the main conservancies and the camps listed in each, how fees work and how to reach the reserve for river crossings. It is part of our Masai Mara safari guide. If you want a Mara-focused trip to compare against, start with our 7 Days Maasai Mara Migration Safari, then ask for a conservancy camp when you request your quote.

Conservancy camps at a glance

Question Short answer
What is a conservancy? Land leased from Maasai landowners for tourism, next to the reserve. Landowners receive a lease fee or a share of profits.
How many are there? The Mara Conservancies association lists 22 conservancies or conservation areas in the wider Mara. Other lists name 14 or 16, depending on what they count.
What is allowed? Night drives, off-road driving and walking safaris, none of which are permitted in the reserve.
Vehicles at a sighting Five at Mara North, by its own rule. One travel company puts Naboisho at four.
Night drives Designated areas only, back at camp by 10 pm at Mara North.
Who can drive? Only guests staying at member camps. Self-driving is not permitted.
Getting there About 270 km from Nairobi: 5 to 6 hours by road or 45 to 60 minutes by air.
Conservancy fees They vary by conservancy, camp and season. Ask for them itemised.

How a conservancy differs from the reserve

The reserve and the conservancies share borders, so animals cross between them. What differs is what you may do and how many people are doing it.

Activity Maasai Mara National Reserve Conservancy
Night drives Not permitted Offered
Off-road driving Not permitted Offered under each conservancy’s rules
Walking safaris Not permitted Offered, led by an armed ranger
Game-drive hours Sunrise to sunset on marked tracks Include night drives until about 10 pm

Africa Geographic says conservancies typically allow one tent for every 350 to 700 hectares. A travel company puts the standard at one guest per 350 acres and says some camps are restricted to 12 tents. The two use different units, so treat them as a sense of scale, not a rule. For context, lodges across the whole Mara grew from fewer than 10 in the late 1970s to 140 in 2008 and nearly 200 in 2016.

One thing surprises some visitors: some conservancies let Maasai graze cattle, so you may see cattle alongside wildlife. It varies by conservancy.

The rules inside a conservancy

Each conservancy sets its own rules. The detail below comes from Mara North Conservancy’s own etiquette page. For Naboisho and Olare Motorogi we found no official rules page, so ask your camp for theirs.

Vehicles at a sighting

Mara North allows no more than five vehicles at a sighting. Extra vehicles wait 100 metres away, and each vehicle has 10 minutes before giving way, though the one that found the animals may stay. Inside the reserve, the Mara Triangle also applies a five-vehicle limit, set by the Mara Conservancy. Our comparison of the Mara Triangle and the Greater Mara explains that side of the reserve.

Off-road driving and behaviour

At Mara North the rule is to stay on the track unless viewing wildlife. For the Big Five, a vehicle may leave the track by the shortest route and keep 20 metres from the animal. The speed limit is 40 kph. Guests stay in the vehicle near wildlife and leave it only at picnic and sundowner sites, and nobody stands on the roof near animals.

Night drives

Night drives run in designated areas only, with red filters, and vehicles are back at camp by 10 pm. Cubs may be viewed at night only once they are 4 months or older.

Walking safaris

Walks in conservancies are led by an armed ranger. Vehicles keep away from walking and riding safaris and take another route.

Who can drive

Self-driving is not permitted in any conservancy. Only guests staying at member camps may game drive there, which is a large part of why numbers stay low.

The main conservancies and their camps

The camps below are those named by the safari directories we checked in October 2026 and by the conservancy association. A directory listing does not prove a camp is open and bookable, so we confirm availability when we quote. Sizes are rounded, because the association’s own hectare and acre figures do not always agree. Our explainer on the Mara conservancies compares them in more depth.

Conservancy Size (about) Camps listed by directories
Mara North 70,000 acres Kicheche Mara Camp, Saruni Mara, Offbeat Mara, Offbeat Ndoto, Serian – The Original, Ngare Serian, Karen Blixen Camp, Basecamp Mara Houses
Olare Motorogi 33,000 acres Mahali Mzuri, Mara Plains Camp, Porini Lion Camp, Mara Toto Tree Camp
Mara Naboisho 50,000 acres Naboisho Camp, Kicheche Valley, Encounter Mara, Saruni Eagle View, Saruni Leopard Hill, Basecamp Wilderness Camp, Hemingways Ol Seki Mara, Kicheche Walking Wilderness
Ol Kinyei 18,500 acres Porini Mara Camp, Porini Cheetah Camp
Lemek 17,000 acres Saruni Wild
Siana 27,000 acres Entumoto, Spirit of Maasai Mara
Nashulai 10,000 acres Oldarpoi Mara Camp
Olderkesi 7,700 acres Cottars 1920s Camp

Mara North

The largest of the group, in the north-west next to the reserve. The association counts 12 tourism partners here: 10 permanent camps and 2 riding outfits. It is also the conservancy whose rules we could read in full.

Olare Motorogi and Naboisho

Both lie beside the reserve and are among the best-known names in the Mara. For Olare Motorogi, one travel company reports one bed per 650 acres and one game-viewing vehicle for every 2,100 acres, across 95 rooms in eight lodges. We found a density figure there, not a per-sighting cap. The association says Naboisho monitors visitor numbers strictly, and the same company reports eight camps and fewer than one bed per 350 acres. Kicheche Walking Wilderness is described as a temporary, seasonal mobile camp. For other high-end options, see our guide to the best luxury lodges and camps in the Masai Mara.

Ol Kinyei and the smaller conservancies

Ol Kinyei sits between the reserve and the Loita migratory plains, with GameWatchers Safaris and Porini Safari Camps as its tourism partner. The smaller conservancies in the table have a camp or two each. Several of the best-known conservancy camps (Mahali Mzuri, Kicheche Mara Camp, Saruni Mara and Porini Mara Camp) are filed as luxury by the directories we read. We found no nightly rates we could verify, so we give none here.

How conservancy fees work

Conservancy fees exist because the land belongs to Maasai landowners who lease it for tourism and receive a lease fee or a share of profits. Camps and their guests pay for that access. One directory notes that camps outside both the reserve and the conservancies carry no extra bed levy, so expect a conservancy camp’s rate to include a levy or to add one. Ask which.

Inside the Mara Triangle, guests pay a park fee towards the Triangle’s conservation. We found no fee amounts we could verify, so we do not quote any. Your quote shows each fee as its own line. Our luxury Masai Mara safari guide covers conservancy costs and a fly-in plan. Fees last verified: October 2026.

Reaching the reserve for river crossings

Conservancies border the reserve, but a conservancy camp does not put you on the river. Many travellers spend most nights in a conservancy and add days in the reserve for crossings during migration season. Ask each camp how long the transfer is and whether full-day reserve drives are offered. Expect reserve entry to be charged on the days you go in; it is its own line in our quotes.

Route Time Note
Nairobi to the Mara by road 5 to 6 hours About 270 km (170 miles)
Nairobi to the Mara by air 45 to 60 minutes Lands at an airstrip, then a game-drive transfer to camp
Kichwa Tembo airstrip to &Beyond Bateleur Camp 30 minutes One example of an airstrip transfer in the north-west

Directories name airstrips such as Musiara and Kichwa Tembo in the north and north-west, Olare Orok, Ol Kiombo and Keekorok. Flying suits shorter trips, such as our 6-Day Fly-In Big Five Safari, which covers Amboseli and the Mara.

Who conservancy camps suit

  • Night drives and walks. If these matter to you, a conservancy is the only place in the Mara to get them.
  • Quieter sightings. Bed limits and vehicle limits mean fewer vehicles at each sighting.
  • Families. Directories describe Offbeat Mara, Saruni Leopard Hill, Basecamp Mara Houses and Hemingways Ol Seki Mara (which has a two-bedroom family unit) as suitable. Age limits vary by camp, so ask us.
  • Tight budgets. Directories place almost all budget properties outside the main reserve boundary, near gates such as Talek and Sekenani. Our guide to where to stay in the Masai Mara compares lodges, tented camps and budget options.

Frequently asked questions

Are conservancy camps better than camps in the reserve?

They do different things. Conservancies win on night drives, walks, off-road viewing and quieter sightings. The reserve is where most travellers watch river crossings in migration season, which is why many itineraries use both.

Can I self-drive in a conservancy?

No. Self-driving is not permitted in any of the conservancies, and only guests staying at member camps may game drive in them.

Are night drives and walks really banned in the reserve?

Yes. Africa Geographic and Wikipedia both state that night drives, off-road driving and walking safaris are not permitted in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Conservancies offer them.

How many vehicles will be at a sighting?

At Mara North, no more than five, with extra vehicles waiting 100 metres away. One travel company puts Naboisho at four. Other conservancies set their own limits, so ask your camp.

Are conservancy camps suitable for children?

Some are. Directories describe a handful as suited to families, but age limits vary by camp and we do not quote a minimum age here. Tell us the ages of your children and we will check each camp.

How many conservancies are there in the Mara?

It depends on who is counting. The Mara Conservancies association lists 22 conservancies or conservation areas. Wikipedia names 14, and the Mara Predator Conservation Programme lists 16 plus the reserve and the Triangle.
