Masai Mara vs Serengeti: One Ecosystem, Two Countries

Great wildebeest migration crossing Mara river at Serengeti National Park - Tanzania

The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are one ecosystem divided by the Kenya-Tanzania border. The Mara is the Kenyan part, the Serengeti is the Tanzanian part, and the same wildebeest herds walk between them each year. The Mara reserve covers 1,510 km2 and holds the herds from about July to October; the Serengeti is far larger and holds them for most of the rest of the year, including the January to March calving on the southern plains.

So the useful question is not which park is better, but which one fits your month, your budget and your time. This page compares them side by side. For the Kenyan half in depth, see our Masai Mara safari guide.

The short answer

  • River crossings, late July to September: both sides have crossing points on the Mara River. The Mara is the simpler trip from Nairobi.
  • Calving, January to March: the Serengeti. The calving plains are in the south of the ecosystem, in Tanzania, and the herds are not in the Mara then.
  • A first, shorter safari: the Mara. One country, one set of park fees and a domestic flight or road transfer from Nairobi.
  • Ten days or more: do both. The 11-day Kenya and Tanzania safari includes the Mara and the Serengeti. It has no published price, so we quote it to order.

One ecosystem, two countries

The Mara River is the thread that ties them together. It is 395 km long, rises on the Mau Escarpment in Narok County, runs through the Mara reserve, crosses into Tanzania and the Serengeti, and drains into Lake Victoria. About 65% of its basin is in Kenya and 35% in Tanzania. The Mara reserve is contiguous with Serengeti National Park, and the wildebeest are a single population that circulates between the southern Serengeti and the Mara.

What the Mara is like

The reserve sits at roughly 1,500 to 2,200 m and covers 1,510 km2. Its south-western corner, the Mara Triangle (510 km2), lies west of the Mara River below the 400 m Oloololo Escarpment and is run by the not-for-profit Mara Conservancy on behalf of the county government. The rest of the reserve is run by Narok County Government. Around the reserve sit private conservancies and community land, which together with the reserve make up the Greater Mara. Researchers at the Mara Predator Conservation Programme use a study area of more than 3,000 km2 for that wider region. It is a research definition, not an administrative boundary.

What the Serengeti is like

It covers a far bigger area, so the month decides which part of it you should visit. The south-east holds the short-grass plains where the herds calve; the north is where the herds are in August. Plan the dates first and the area second, because a camp in the wrong part of the Serengeti can be a long way from the herds.

Where the herds are, month by month

Months What the herds do Where to be
January to March Calving on the south-east short-grass plains Serengeti (Tanzania)
May Herds move north-west towards the Grumeti River area Serengeti
June Around the Grumeti until late June; in wet years the first herds can reach the Mara from mid-June Serengeti; Mara in early years
July Grumeti and Mara river crossings begin Northern Serengeti or Mara
Late July to September Herds arrive in Kenya for the dry season; busiest crossing action Mara
October Herds usually still in the Mara, starting to head south Mara
November and December Herds start south with the short rains in early November and usually reach the south in December Serengeti

Treat these months as a guide, not a promise. Rain and grass set the timing. In 2021 Kenyan scientists said the migration was delayed significantly by dry conditions, and herds that were due in the Mara were still in Tanzania. Our Great Migration calendar goes deeper on each month.

How many wildebeest are there?

Estimates range from about 0.5 million to 1.4 million. The Tanzanian aerial count of March 2023 found 1,366,109, give or take 231,741. A 2025 satellite study counted 502,917 to 533,137 in August 2023 imagery. The two methods and months differ, so either way you will see very large herds.

River crossings: Kenya side and Tanzania side

Crossings happen on both sides of the border, and names and numbers vary between operators. One guide lists eight on the Kenyan side. The Sand River crossing is less dramatic because the river is usually dry and shallow, while Mawe Mawe is heavily used and has many crocodiles. The Pontoon crossing can be reached by only a handful of vehicles. On the Tanzanian side vehicles can only view crossing 1 from the Lamai wedge. Our guide to Mara River crossings explains when and where to watch.

Park fees and crowds

The Mara fee is the one hard number we can give you for either park. It is charged per person per day, and it doubles on 1 July, just as the herds arrive.

Visitor 1 January to 30 June 1 July to 31 December
Non-resident adult USD 100 a day USD 200 a day
Non-resident child, 9 to 17 USD 50 a day USD 50 a day
Younger children Free (confirm age 8) Free (confirm age 8)

A ticket is a 12-hour ticket, valid 6:00 am to 6:00 pm whatever time you enter, and it does not carry over overnight. If you leave by road on the departure morning, sources give a 10 am or 11 am cut-off before another day’s fee applies, so ask your planner. The Mara Triangle sells its own ticket, bought online or from authorised staff at points such as Purungat Bridge, and the Conservancy takes M-Pesa or card, not cash. Check its current amounts with the Mara Conservancy. Sources differ on whether eight-year-olds are free, so confirm that with your planner. Fees last verified: October 2026.

This page quotes no Serengeti park fee, because Tanzania sets its own and it changes. Your quote itemises it.

On crowds, Kenya’s statistics bureau, as reported by Business Daily, put Mara visitors at 420,000 in 2023, 343,000 in 2024 and 213,000 in 2025. An annual total says little about one crossing in August, though.

Getting there, and what changes the price

Mara safaris start in Nairobi, by road or a domestic flight. Serengeti safaris start in northern Tanzania. To join the two, see our guide to the Masai Mara and Serengeti safari, which covers the crossing, flights and cost. Your itinerary lists the exact transfers.

Lodge choice moves the price more than the park does, so we do not put one figure on this comparison. Where you sleep also differs: inside the reserve, in the Mara Triangle or in a conservancy on its edge, each managed differently. Our 21-day Kenya and Tanzania safari with Zanzibar is from USD 9,050 per person, depending on season, group size and lodge choice. An optional Masai Mara hot-air balloon flight is USD 550 per person.

Two ways to see both sides

21-Day Kenya and Tanzania Safari with Zanzibar – for travellers with three weeks who want both countries and the coast. From USD 9,050 per person.

4 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari – for a short Tanzania-only trip. Tailor-made quote, no published price.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Masai Mara the same as the Serengeti?

No, but they are connected. The Mara is in Kenya and the Serengeti is in Tanzania. The Mara reserve is contiguous with Serengeti National Park, and the wildebeest move between them, so many people treat them as one ecosystem with two parks and two sets of rules.

Which is better for the Great Migration?

It depends on the month. The Mara has the herds from about July to October, while the Serengeti has them for most of the rest of the year. For river crossings, late July to September is the usual window in either country.

Is the Masai Mara cheaper than the Serengeti?

We cannot give a fair answer without a Serengeti fee we have verified. What we can say is that a Mara adult pays USD 100 a day to 30 June and USD 200 from 1 July. Lodge choice usually changes the total more than the park does.

Can I visit both on one trip?

Yes. You can combine them on a trip of ten days or more. See our guide to the Masai Mara and Serengeti safari, or ask for a quote for the 4-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari plus a Kenya extension.

Which park is less crowded?

Neither is always quieter. Mara visitor numbers fell to 213,000 in 2025, yet an annual total says little about one crossing on one August morning. Ask which camps and crossing points suit your dates.

When is the best time to see calving?

January to March, on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti in Tanzania. Most births are usually in February. The herds are not in the Mara at that time.
