Lake Nakuru National park

Located in the floor of Rift Valley and 97miles (156km) north west of Nairobi, Lake Nakuru National Park is a scenic park with wonderful landscape which is home to a variety of wildlife species.

It was first declared a conservation area in 1957, gazetted as a bird sanctuary in 1960 and later upgraded to a National Park status in 1968.

The Lake Nakuru surface occupies around a third of the park. The park is covered by yellow acacia woodlands and unique euphorbia forests which happens to be the largest in Africa.

With an altitude of 5775ft and being near the equator, the area climate is quite comfortable and welcoming.

Getting to Lake Nakuru

By road – Travelling by road from Nairobi is a distance of 170km.

To access the park, you can use the main gate which is located 4km from Nakuru Town Centre. You can also enter the park using Lanet gate which is located in Nairobi – Nakuru road or Nderit gate which is mainly used by people coming from Masai Mara or Elementaita. The park fee for non-residents adults is 35USD and 20USD for a child.

By Air – If you choose a flight option, you can fly from Wilson Airport to Naishi Airstrip which is located in the park.

Attractions in Lake Nakuru National Park

It has a large population of around 2 million of the greater and the lesser pink flamingoes that colorfully grace the deep alkaline water lake. The flamingoes are attracted to the lake because of the algae diet found in the lake. Furthermore, it prides itself as home to around 450 bird species which makes it an ideal park to have an amazing bird viewing experience. Some of these birds include the Hamerkops, Fish Eagles, Marabou Storks and billed pelicans.

Some of the endangered species of wildlife found in Lake Nakuru National Park are the rare Rothschild’s giraffe and white rhinos. Aside from that it also serving as a black rhino sanctuary and has one of the highest concentrations of black rhinoceros.

Other wildlife that will make your game drive experience at the park great include, Zebras, Hippos, Olive baboons, Wild dogs, Hyenas, Colobus monkeys, Lions, Cheetahs and Leopards.

Makalia, a waterfall located in the south end park is one of the beautiful picnic sites with wonderful view.
